SCR Rothis edged Lustenau 4-3 in a pulsating Austrian 3.Liga encounter on Saturday evening, serving up a seven-goal thriller that kept supporters at Sportplatz Rothis on the edge of their seats until the final whistle. The hosts twice surrendered the lead but found a late winner to claim all three points in a match that had everything: sharp finishing, defensive errors, and a momentum shift in almost every phase of play.

Match overview

Rothis began with intent, pressing high and forcing Lustenau into early turnovers. The opener arrived inside the first ten minutes when Lukas Berger latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the box and drove a low finish into the bottom corner. Lustenau responded well, equalising midway through the first half through a well-worked move down the right, but Rothis restored their advantage before the break with a header from a corner. A stoppage-time equaliser for Lustenau made it 2-2 at half-time and set up a chaotic second period.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Rothis moved back in front just before the hour mark, only for Lustenau to level again with a crisp finish from the edge of the area. With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Rothis pushed forward in the final ten minutes and found the decisive goal through a quick counter-attack, finishing clinically from close range to make it 4-3.

Tactical story

Rothis set up in a flexible 4-2-3-1 and used an aggressive high press to disrupt Lustenau’s attempts to play out from the back. The hosts won several second balls in midfield and repeatedly attacked the space behind Lustenau’s full-backs. Their willingness to commit numbers forward left gaps at the back, though, and Lustenau’s direct counter-attacking caused problems throughout.

Lustenau’s 4-4-2 shape was designed to stay compact and strike on the break. It worked for long stretches, especially in the first half, but their inability to defend set pieces proved costly. Both of Rothis’s first two goals came from dead-ball situations, and the late winner arrived when Lustenau pushed too many players forward in search of a fourth equaliser.

Standout players

Lukas Berger was the attacking focal point for Rothis, scoring the opener and constantly stretching the Lustenau defence with his movement. His link-up play with the midfield was central to the hosts’ best moments. For Lustenau, Marco Hofer was influential in the final third, contributing to two of his side’s three goals and testing the Rothis goalkeeper with several ambitious efforts.

Table impact

The win lifts Rothis into a more comfortable position in the Austrian 3.Liga standings and gives them valuable momentum in the race for a top-half finish. Lustenau, meanwhile, will rue a missed opportunity to take points from a match in which they scored three times away from home. The result also adds another high-scoring chapter to the head-to-head record between the two clubs, with Rothis now able to point to a hard-fought home win as a sign of their growing resilience.
