LASK Linz 3-3 SV Ried: six-goal Austrian Cup thriller ends level

LASK Linz and SV Ried played out a remarkable 3-3 draw in the Austrian Cup, a contest that swung repeatedly and delivered six goals. Neither side could hold onto a lead for long, and the final scoreline reflected the openness of a tie played at high tempo.

LASK Linz looked capable of taking control when they moved the ball quickly through midfield, but SV Ried refused to fold. The visitors responded to setbacks with character and kept finding ways back into the game, turning what could have been a routine home win into a breathless cup night.

Match overview

LASK started brightly and tried to impose themselves with early pressure. Their midfield pushed high, the wide players stretched the pitch and the first goal arrived from a well-worked attacking move. SV Ried, however, were not rattled. They stayed compact, defended with numbers and waited for their moments to break forward.

The game developed into a pattern of LASK control followed by Ried counter-punches. Each time the home side threatened to pull away, Ried found a response. The second half was especially open, with both teams committing players forward and leaving space in behind. The 3-3 scoreline was the natural outcome of a match in which defensive solidity gave way to attacking ambition.

Key moments

• LASK take the lead: The home side opened the scoring after building pressure, finding space in the box and finishing with authority.
• Ried answer back: SV Ried responded with a quick attacking move of their own, showing they were willing to trade blows rather than sit back.
• LASK restore the advantage: The home team regained the lead before the interval, punishing a moment of hesitation in the Ried defence.
• Second-half swing: Ried equalised again after the break, capitalising on a turnover and finishing confidently.
• Late drama: LASK scored a third, only for Ried to find a late response and complete a memorable 3-3 draw.

Tactical story

LASK’s approach was proactive. They looked to win the ball back quickly, use their wide areas and create chances through sustained pressure. When they were able to play through midfield, they looked the more dangerous side. The problem was their exposure to counters: with full-backs advanced and midfielders committed forward, LASK left space for Ried to attack.

SV Ried’s plan was built on resilience and timing. They defended in a compact shape, invited pressure at times and then broke with purpose. Their equalisers came from a mix of direct running, quick passing and the willingness to shoot when chances appeared. The visitors did not dominate possession, but they were efficient in the moments that mattered.

Standout performers

Both attacking units deserve credit for the quality of the finishing and the persistence of their movement. LASK’s wide players caused problems throughout, delivering crosses and cutting inside to create shooting angles. Ried’s forward players were equally important, holding the ball up, running the channels and converting the chances that came their way.

The goalkeepers were kept busy and made several important saves, even if the night will be remembered more for the goals than the stops. In midfield, the game was decided by transitions: whoever won the second ball usually had the space to launch the next attack.

What it means

The 3-3 draw keeps the Austrian Cup tie finely balanced after a night of attacking football. LASK Linz will be frustrated by their inability to protect their leads, especially after scoring three times at home. SV Ried, by contrast, will take confidence from their fighting spirit and their ability to respond under pressure.

For both teams, the match offered a clear lesson: in cup football, control without defensive security is fragile. LASK must tighten up when they lead, while Ried can build on a performance that showed character, quality in transition and a refusal to accept defeat.
