Joondalup City produced a dominant second‑half display to defeat Floreat Athena 3–1 and climb higher up the State League 1 standings. The visitors started brightly but were undone by a clinical counter‑attacking performance from the hosts.

First‑half stalemate

Floreat Athena took an early lead in the 12th minute through a well‑worked set piece. A short corner was played to Mason Wright, who crossed for Jake Palmer to nod home at the far post. Joondalup City looked rattled for a period but grew into the half, and were unlucky not to equalise when striker Sean Townsend hit the crossbar from a tight angle.

Joondalup turn it around

The second half was a different story. Joondalup City came out with renewed energy and equalised in the 52nd minute through a brilliant solo run from winger Declan O’Brien, who cut inside from the left and drove a low shot into the bottom corner. The goal lifted the home side, and they took the lead just seven minutes later. A long ball forward was flicked on by Townsend to O’Brien, who squared for midfielder Nathan Cooper to tap into an empty net.

Floreat Athena pushed for a second equaliser but left gaps at the back. Joondalup sealed the victory in the 79th minute when substitute Jack Martin raced onto a through‑ball and finished calmly past the onrushing goalkeeper.

What the result means

The win moves Joondalup City up to 4th in the State League 1 table, just three points off the promotion places. Floreat Athena remain in the bottom half and will need to tighten their defence if they are to climb away from danger. Next week, Joondalup travel to second‑placed Fremantle City ina tough test of their credentials.
