University Azzurri FC held off a late Mindil Aces rally to secure a 3–2 victory under the humid Darwin night skies at Larrakia Park. The win strengthens Azzurri’s push for the top half of the table, while Mindil Aces were left to lament missed chances in the final minutes.

First Half Momentum

Azzurri started brightly, dominating possession and creating early openings. Their pressure paid off in the 18th minute when midfielder Daniel Costa curled a beautiful free kick over the wall and into the top corner. The lead was doubled just before the half-hour mark: a swift counter-attack ended with striker Lucas Gallo slotting home from close range.

Mindil Aces struggled to find rhythm but pulled one back in the 39th minute through a penalty converted by captain Jack Whitfield after a handball in the area. The scoreline at the break was 2–1 in favour of the hosts.

Second Half Decider

University Azzurri came out with renewed energy after the interval. In the 52nd minute, a defensive mix-up by Mindil allowed Gallo to tap in his second of the night, making it 3–1. The Aces, however, refused to fold. Midfielder Ben Hampson reduced the deficit with a powerful strike from the edge of the box in the 78th minute, setting up a nervy finish.

Despite throwing bodies forward, Mindil could not find an equaliser. Azzurri goalkeeper James Roper made two crucial saves in stoppage time to preserve the win.

The victory moves University Azzurri to mid-table security, while Mindil Aces remain just above the relegation zone with work to do.
