Van Charentsavan Edge Ararat Yerevan 2-1 in Armenian Premier League Battle

FK Van Charentsavan claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ararat Yerevan in the Armenian Premier League on Friday, 23 October 2026, producing a performance full of energy, pressing and late composure at Charentsavan City Stadium. The home side took the lead, survived an Ararat response, and found the decisive goal in the closing stages to secure three valuable points.

The match was played at a brisk tempo from the opening whistle, with Van Charentsavan looking to impose themselves in front of their own supporters and Ararat Yerevan attempting to control possession through midfield. The result adds another tight chapter to the recent head-to-head between the two clubs and gives Van a timely boost in the league standings.

Match Overview

Van started with intent, pressing Ararat’s back line and forcing several early turnovers in the attacking half. That pressure paid off in the 18th minute when Tigran Gharibyan latched onto a clever through ball and finished calmly past the Ararat goalkeeper to make it 1-0. The goal lifted the home crowd and forced Ararat to respond with more urgency in possession.

Ararat gradually settled into the contest and began to find space between Van’s midfield and defensive lines. Their improvement was rewarded in the 41st minute when Karen Muradyan arrived late in the box to convert a low cross from the right, sending the teams into half-time level at 1-1.

The second half was more open. Ararat enjoyed longer spells of the ball, but Van remained dangerous on the counterattack and from set pieces. The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute when substitute Narek Petrosyan reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area and stabbed it home to restore Van’s lead. Ararat pushed forward in the final minutes, but Van’s defence held firm.

Tactical Story

Van Charentsavan’s success was built on aggressive pressing and quick transitions. Their midfield worked tirelessly to close down Ararat’s central players, and the front line consistently attacked the space behind the visiting defence. The home side did not dominate possession, but they created the clearer chances by turning defence into attack quickly.

Ararat Yerevan showed flashes of quality in possession, particularly through the middle third, but they struggled to break down Van’s compact defensive block in the final 20 minutes. Their equaliser came from a well-worked wide move, yet they were unable to turn their second-half pressure into a second goal. Van’s substitutions also proved decisive, with Petrosyan’s introduction adding fresh energy in the attacking third.

Standout Players

Tigran Gharibyan was central to Van’s attacking threat, opening the scoring and constantly stretching the Ararat defence with his movement. Narek Petrosyan made the difference from the bench, scoring the winner and helping Van manage the closing stages. In defence, the home side’s goalkeeper produced a vital second-half save that kept the score level before the late breakthrough.

For Ararat, Karen Muradyan was the standout performer, scoring the equaliser and linking play well in midfield. His ability to arrive in the box from deeper positions caused Van problems throughout the first hour. Ararat’s goalkeeper also made several important stops, even though he was ultimately beaten twice.

League Impact

The victory gives Van Charentsavan an important three-point haul and strengthens their position in the upper half of the Armenian Premier League table. For Ararat Yerevan, the defeat is a missed opportunity to close the gap on the teams above them, though their performance showed enough attacking quality to suggest they will remain competitive in the coming weeks.
