River Plate 1-2 CA Huracán: Visitors Stun Argentine Giants in Division 1 Clash

CA Huracán produced one of the standout results of the Argentine Division 1 round, defeating River Plate 2-1 away at the Estadio Monumental. The visitors delivered a disciplined, counter-attacking performance and handed River a costly home defeat in the race at the top of the standings. River controlled long spells of the match, but Huracán were sharper in the decisive moments and left with all three points.

Match Overview

River Plate began with the expected authority, pushing their full-backs high and circulating the ball quickly through midfield. Huracán sat compact in a 4-4-2 block, inviting pressure before looking for quick transitions through the channels. The opening goal came against the run of play, and it changed the rhythm of the contest. River responded well before half-time, but Huracán regained the lead after the break and defended their advantage with maturity.

The result adds a surprising chapter to the Argentine Division 1 season. River Plate remain one of the strongest squads in the league, but dropped points at home always carry extra weight. For Huracán, the victory is a statement of intent and a valuable boost to their campaign confidence.

Key Moments

• 18’ – Huracán take the lead: Eric Ramírez latched onto a through ball behind the River defence and finished low past the goalkeeper.
• 41’ – River Plate equalise: Adam Bareiro converted from close range after sustained pressure and a scramble inside the penalty area.
• 67’ – Huracán strike again: Walter Mazzantti cut inside from the right and curled a precise left-footed shot into the far corner.
• 84’ – River denied: A strong save from the Huracán goalkeeper kept out a powerful header from a corner.

Tactical Story

River Plate dominated possession and created more entries into the final third, but Huracán’s defensive structure held firm. The visitors kept their lines close, protected the central corridor, and forced River into wide crosses. When Huracán won the ball, they moved forward with purpose and attacked the space left behind River’s advanced full-backs. That approach produced both goals and limited River’s clear chances.

Standout Players

Walter Mazzantti was Huracán’s most dangerous outlet, combining energy with end product. Eric Ramírez’s movement stretched River’s centre-backs throughout, while the goalkeeper produced a decisive late save. For River Plate, Ignacio Fernández tried to dictate tempo, and Bareiro’s equaliser briefly restored momentum, but the home side lacked the final bit of precision in the closing stages.

What It Means for the Standings

The defeat leaves River Plate with work to do in the Argentine Division 1 title race, especially if their closest rivals take full advantage. Huracán, meanwhile, climb with renewed belief and will view this result as proof they can compete against the league’s biggest clubs. The head-to-head record now carries a memorable away win for Huracán, and the tactical template they used at the Monumental could shape their approach in similar fixtures ahead.
