Newell's Reserves 1-0 Rosario Central Reserves: Clásico Glory for the Leprosos

Newell's Old Boys Reserves claimed local bragging rights with a 1-0 win over Rosario Central Reserves in the Argentina Santa Fe Cup, settling a fiercely contested reserve-team clásico rosarino with a single goal. In a match where space was at a premium, the hosts' patience and defensive organisation proved decisive.

Match Overview

Reserve-team derbies rarely lack intensity, and this meeting was no exception. Both sides pressed aggressively from the first whistle, contesting every second ball and refusing to allow comfortable possession in midfield. Clear chances were rare in the early stages, with the two back lines holding firm.

Newell's gradually found their rhythm, moving the ball more quickly and asking questions of Rosario Central's full-backs. The breakthrough arrived through a moment of quality, and from that point the hosts managed the game with impressive maturity, protecting their lead without abandoning their attacking intent.

Key Moments

• Decisive goal: Newell's broke the deadlock with a well-worked move that opened up the visiting defence.
• Denied: Rosario Central threatened an equaliser, but a strong save and a goal-line clearance preserved the hosts' advantage.
• Late siege: The visitors pushed numbers forward in the final minutes, only for Newell's to defend their box with discipline.

Tactical Story

Both reserve sides prioritise development, and the tactical detail on show was notable. Newell's favoured controlled possession through the thirds, while Rosario Central looked to win the ball back quickly and attack direct. The hosts' ability to remain compact when the ball was lost proved the difference, denying their rivals the space they thrive on.

The game also highlighted the depth of talent in the Santa Fe region's youth systems, with several players on both sides showing composure beyond their years in a high-pressure derby environment.

Season Context

Victory sends Newell's Reserves into the next stage of the Santa Fe Cup with confidence and a valuable psychological edge in the rivalry. For Rosario Central Reserves, the narrow defeat offers lessons to take into upcoming fixtures — notably in converting late territorial pressure into genuine chances.
