Independiente Rivadavia Reserves Edge San Martin de San Juan Reserves 3-2 in Five-Goal Thriller

Independiente Rivadavia Reserves claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over San Martin de San Juan Reserves in the Argentine Reserve League, sealing the points with a late winner after squandering a two-goal lead. The home side’s fast start and San Martin’s spirited comeback produced an end-to-end contest that underlined the attacking quality and competitive edge of the reserve division.

Match overview

Rivadavia began with purpose, pressing high and forcing San Martin into early mistakes. Two first-half goals gave the home side a deserved cushion, but the visitors responded after the break with a more aggressive midfield approach and pulled one back through a well-worked set piece. When San Martin equalised in the 76th minute, the match appeared to be heading for a draw, only for Rivadavia to find a late response of their own. The closing stages were frantic, with both benches urging their teams forward and the home crowd playing a visible role in pushing the reserves to a winner.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Tomás Aguirre gave Rivadavia the lead, finishing calmly after a turnover in San Martin’s half.
• 34th minute: Nicolás Ferreyra doubled the advantage with a header from a corner, punishing San Martin’s failure to clear.
• 58th minute: Facundo Molina pulled one back for the visitors, converting a penalty after a foul inside the area.
• 76th minute: Bruno Cáceres levelled the score with a low drive from the edge of the box, capping a strong period of San Martin pressure.
• 88th minute: Joaquín Sosa restored Rivadavia’s lead with a composed finish on the counter, sending the home bench into celebration.

Tactical story

Rivadavia’s high press was the defining feature of the first hour. Their forwards cut off passing lanes into midfield, forcing San Martin to go long and allowing the home side to win second balls in advanced areas. San Martin adjusted at half-time, switching to a more compact 4-2-3-1 and pushing their full-backs higher to stretch Rivadavia’s midfield. That change brought the visitors back into the game, with Molina and Cáceres finding more space between the lines. Rivadavia’s response was to drop slightly deeper and attack through quick transitions, a decision that paid off when Sosa broke away for the winner.

Standout performers

Aguirre was central to Rivadavia’s attacking play, linking midfield and forward lines and opening the scoring in the first quarter of an hour. Sosa’s late winner highlighted his composure under pressure, while Ferreyra’s set-piece threat gave the home side an important aerial dimension. For San Martin, Molina’s penalty and Cáceres’ equaliser were the products of their improved second-half intensity, but the visitors will rue the space they conceded in the final minutes.

Standings and season impact

The three points keep Independiente Rivadavia Reserves in the thick of the Argentine Reserve League standings and provide a timely boost to their development-focused campaign. San Martin de San Juan Reserves leave with nothing despite a brave comeback, though their second-half performance showed the character within the group. In a reserve competition where momentum and player progression matter as much as results, Rivadavia’s ability to respond after losing control of the match will be especially pleasing to the coaching staff.
