Chacarita Juniors claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Deportivo Maipú in the ARG Primera Nacional on October 18, 2026, at the Estadio Chacarita Juniors. A second-half header from centre-back Santiago López proved decisive, while the home side’s compact defensive display kept Deportivo Maipú at arm’s length in a tense, tightly contested fixture.

Match overview

Chacarita Juniors started with purpose, pressing high and forcing Deportivo Maipú into a series of early clearances. The home side dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes but struggled to turn that control into clear-cut chances. Deportivo Maipú sat deep, looked to spring counter-attacks through the channels, and nearly caught Chacarita out with a quick break midway through the first half.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. A deep cross from the right was met by López, who rose above his marker and powered a header into the bottom corner. Chacarita then dropped slightly deeper, inviting pressure, but their back line held firm. Deportivo Maipú pushed bodies forward late on and forced a handful of set pieces, yet the home goalkeeper dealt comfortably with everything thrown at him.

Key moments

• 63rd minute: Santiago López heads Chacarita Juniors into a 1-0 lead from a right-sided cross.
• 74th minute: Deportivo Maipú’s best chance of the match is tipped over the bar after a curling free-kick.
• 88th minute: Chacarita nearly double the lead on the counter, but the final shot is blocked inside the penalty area.

Tactical story

Chacarita Juniors were organised and patient. Their midfield trio worked hard to win second balls, and the full-backs offered width without leaving the centre-backs exposed. The home side’s game plan was clear: keep the match compact, wait for a set-piece opportunity, and protect the lead once it arrived. That approach worked perfectly after López’s goal.

Deportivo Maipú, by contrast, struggled to find rhythm in the final third. Their striker was often isolated, and the service from wide areas was predictable. They improved after the hour mark and forced Chacarita onto the back foot, but the lack of a genuine penalty-box presence cost them dearly. The visitors finished with more corners but fewer shots on target, a statistic that summed up their evening.

Standout performers

López was the obvious hero for Chacarita Juniors, combining defensive solidity with the match-winning goal. The goalkeeper also deserved credit for a calm, authoritative display, particularly during the closing stages. In midfield, the captain set the tempo and repeatedly broke up Deportivo Maipú’s attempts to build momentum.

For Deportivo Maipú, the left-back was their most consistent outlet, pushing forward bravely and delivering several dangerous crosses. Their goalkeeper made two important saves to keep the scoreline respectable, but the visitors will leave feeling they lacked the quality needed in the final third.

Season impact

The three points strengthen Chacarita Juniors’ position in the Primera Nacional standings and keep them firmly in the race for a promotion play-off place. For Deportivo Maipú, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency, with their away form continuing to be a concern. Chacarita’s ability to win without playing at their fluent best will be seen as a positive sign as the season moves into a crucial phase.
