Atletico Rafaela claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Quilmes in the Argentine Primera Nacional, using a disciplined home performance and a decisive second-half goal to take all three points. The result gave Rafaela an important boost in the league standings and extended Quilmes’ frustrating run away from home.

Match overview

The contest at the Estadio Nuevo Monumental was tight from the opening whistle, with both sides prioritising structure over risk. Rafaela controlled more of the ball in the first half but struggled to find space against a compact Quilmes block, while the visitors looked dangerous on the counter and forced the home goalkeeper into an early save.

Quilmes’ best spell came midway through the first half, when they pressed higher and won a series of set pieces. Rafaela survived those moments and gradually re-established control after the interval, pushing their full-backs forward and creating better crossing angles from the right.

Key moments

The breakthrough arrived in the 64th minute. Rafaela worked the ball wide before delivering a low cross into the penalty area, and the home side’s central striker got across his marker to convert from close range. It was a goal that rewarded Rafaela’s patience and their improved tempo after the break.

Quilmes responded with fresh legs and a more direct approach, but Rafaela’s back line held firm. The visitors had a late penalty appeal waved away and sent several crosses into the box, yet the home defence dealt with the pressure calmly. A stoppage-time block inside the six-yard box sealed the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Rafaela’s 4-2-3-1 shape gave them control in midfield, with the double pivot shielding the defence and allowing the attacking midfielders to drift into half-spaces. Their best work came when they switched play quickly and attacked the far post. Quilmes, using a 4-4-2, tried to stay compact and hit on the break, but they were often isolated in attack and struggled to sustain possession in the final third.

The decisive tactical adjustment came from Rafaela’s increased width in the second half. By stretching Quilmes’ midfield line, they created room for late runs into the box, and that pattern produced the only goal of the game.

Standout performers

• Rafaela’s goalkeeper: Made two important first-half saves and commanded his area well under late pressure.
• Rafaela’s central defender: Won key duels and cleared several dangerous crosses in the closing stages.
• Rafaela’s match-winner: Showed excellent movement to meet the decisive cross and finish calmly.
• Quilmes’ midfield anchor: Broke up play effectively for long spells and kept the visitors competitive.

Standings and season impact

The victory strengthens Atletico Rafaela’s position in the Primera Nacional table and adds momentum to their promotion push. A clean sheet will be especially pleasing for the coaching staff, as Rafaela have often been involved in tighter, higher-scoring contests. For Quilmes, the defeat leaves them searching for consistency on the road, though their defensive organisation offered signs of encouragement ahead of the next round.
