USM Alger and CR Belouizdad Share the Spoils in 2-2 Algiers Derby

USM Alger and CR Belouizdad played out a dramatic 2-2 draw in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1, with the Algiers derby delivering four goals, a tense atmosphere and a result that keeps both clubs in the thick of the title conversation. At the Stade Omar Hamadi, USM Alger built an early lead, but CR Belouizdad showed the resilience of a championship contender by fighting back to claim a point.

Matches between these two sides rarely lack intensity, and this encounter was no exception. USM Alger started with purpose, pressing high and attacking the space behind CR Belouizdad’s full-backs. The visitors, known for their structured build-up and patient possession, took time to settle. By the time they found their rhythm, the home side had already established a two-goal cushion and the crowd was fully involved.

How the Match Unfolded

USM Alger’s opener came after a spell of sustained pressure, with a quick combination on the right creating space for a cross into the box. The finish was decisive and gave the home side the momentum. The second goal arrived before the break and had a different flavour: a turnover in midfield, a fast break and a composed finish that made it 2-0. At that stage, USM Alger looked in control.

CR Belouizdad responded before half-time with a goal that changed the mood. A well-placed pass split the defence, and the forward’s run was rewarded with a finish that beat the goalkeeper at the near post. The goal gave the visitors belief and forced USM Alger to defend deeper after the restart. Belouizdad dominated possession in the second half and eventually found the equaliser through a move that stretched the home defence from side to side.

• Fast start: USM Alger scored first after sustained pressure down the right.
• Two-goal lead: A midfield turnover led to a quick counter-attack and a 2-0 advantage.
• Belouizdad lifeline: The visitors pulled one back before half-time with a well-timed run in behind.
• Late leveller: CR Belouizdad’s second-half pressure finally produced the equalising goal.

Tactical Story: Control, Transitions and the Derby Tempo

USM Alger’s plan was built on quick transitions and early crosses. For 35 minutes, it worked beautifully. Their midfield won second balls and their forwards attacked the penalty area with numbers. The problem came when Belouizdad adjusted, pushing an extra midfielder into the central lane and forcing USM Alger to defend with a lower block.

CR Belouizdad’s comeback was driven by patience and width. Their full-backs pushed higher, the wingers stayed wide and the midfield kept recycling possession until gaps appeared. USM Alger still carried a threat on the break, but the home side became more reactive as the second half wore on. The equaliser felt deserved on the balance of play, even if USM Alger will rue not protecting their two-goal lead.

Standout Performances

USM Alger’s goalkeeper made several important saves in the second half and kept his side level before the late equaliser. The home captain in midfield was excellent in the first half, setting the tempo and breaking up play, while the forward line caused problems with direct running. For CR Belouizdad, the substitute midfielder changed the game by adding energy and forward passing, and the centre-back pairing stayed composed as the derby grew more frantic.

What the Result Means

The draw keeps both USM Alger and CR Belouizdad firmly in the Ligue Professionnelle 1 title race, but it also leaves a sense of what might have been. USM Alger will focus on game management after letting a two-goal lead slip, while CR Belouizdad will take confidence from their second-half response. In a derby of this intensity, a point away from home is far from a disaster, and both sides will now look to turn this momentum into wins in their next league fixtures.
