JSM Skikda 1-0 MSP Batna: Maouche strike settles tense Ligue 2 contest

JSM Skikda claimed a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over MSP Batna in Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 2 action on October 24, 2026, at the Stade 20 Août 1955. Sofiane Maouche scored the only goal of the match just after the hour mark, rewarding a patient and increasingly dominant home performance.

The result gives Skikda three valuable points in a competitive promotion picture, while MSP Batna leave empty-handed after producing a disciplined but limited attacking display.

Match overview

Skikda began with purpose, pressing high and forcing Batna into several early clearances. The hosts lined up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, using quick switches of play to isolate their wide attackers against Batna’s full-backs. Batna, organised in a compact 4-4-2 block, looked content to absorb pressure and threaten on the counter through long diagonal balls.

The first half was short on clear chances but high on intensity. Skikda’s midfield duo controlled the rhythm, while Batna’s back line held firm under a stream of crosses. The home crowd grew louder as the game wore on, sensing that a single moment could decide the night.

Key moments

• 12 minutes: Skikda’s first serious opening came from a low cross, but Batna goalkeeper Islem Boudjema gathered bravely at the near post.
• 34 minutes: A Skikda corner caused panic in the Batna box, but a goalbound header was cleared off the line by a retreating defender.
• 67 minutes: The breakthrough arrived when Sofiane Maouche latched onto a loose ball just inside the area and drilled a low finish into the bottom corner.
• 84 minutes: Batna’s best chance of the night fell to their striker, but Riad Benhamou produced a sharp save to protect the lead.
• 90+4 minutes: Skikda cleared a final free-kick into the box to seal the win.

Tactical story

Skikda’s control of midfield was the foundation of the victory. Their double pivot kept Batna’s counters in check and allowed the full-backs to push forward. Batna defended well for long spells, but their inability to keep possession under pressure meant they were eventually forced deeper and deeper.

The decisive adjustment came when Skikda moved Maouche into a more central role between the lines. That change dragged Batna’s centre-backs out of position and created the space for the winning goal. Batna responded with fresh legs, but the away side lacked the final pass to turn possession into genuine chances.

Standout players

Maouche was the obvious hero for Skikda, combining intelligent movement with a composed finish. Benhamou’s late save was equally important, while centre-back Yacine Kerbadj produced a commanding display at the heart of the defence. For Batna, Boudjema and centre-back Anis Merabet could be proud of their defensive work despite the defeat.

What the result means

JSM Skikda strengthen their position in the upper half of the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 2 standings and will take confidence from another clean sheet. MSP Batna remain in a difficult run and must find more attacking fluency if they are to climb the table. The match report will be remembered less for its chances and more for Skikda’s patience and the quality of Maouche’s decisive finish.
