Butrinti Sarande produced a gritty comeback to beat KF Oriku 2-1 in the Albanian Cup first round at the Orikum Stadium on Wednesday evening. After falling behind early, the visitors scored twice to secure their place in the next round.

Match Overview

KF Oriku started brightly and took the lead in the 18th minute when a poorly cleared corner fell to defender Andi Zeka, who volleyed home from close range. The home side continued to press and nearly doubled their lead minutes later, but Butrinti goalkeeper Arber Sulaj made a fine save. That stop proved crucial as Butrinti equalised in the 42nd minute. A quick counter-attack ended with striker Erjon Vuçaj slotting the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. The second half was a more balanced affair, with both teams creating chances. Butrinti grew in confidence and found the winner in the 67th minute when midfielder Redon Xhixha curled a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box. Oriku pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way through a resolute Butrinti defence.

Key Moments

• 18' – Goal (Oriku): Andi Zeka scored from a corner to give the hosts the lead.
• 42' – Goal (Butrinti): Erjon Vuçaj equalised with a calm finish on the break.
• 67' – Goal (Butrinti): Redon Xhixha scored a stunning winner from outside the box.

Tactical Story

Oriku set up in a 4-4-2, looking to use their physicality and set-piece threat. They dominated the early exchanges but failed to capitalise on their chances. Butrinti, playing a 4-2-3-1, gradually grew into the game by pressing higher and disrupting Oriku's rhythm. The key tactical battle was in midfield, where Butrinti's Redon Xhixha and captain Endrit Hysa began to win the second balls. The winning goal came from a moment of individual brilliance, but it was built on Butrinti's improved control of the game. Oriku's defence, which had looked solid early on, switched off for the decisive moment.

Standout Players

Redon Xhixha was Butrinti's hero with the winning goal and a complete midfield performance. Erjon Vuçaj was a constant threat with his pace and movement. For Oriku, Andi Zeka scored and defended well, while goalkeeper Erando Karaj kept the score respectable with several saves.

What It Means

Butrinti Sarande move on to the next round, where they will be outsiders against stronger opposition but will fancy their chances after this resilient display. For KF Oriku, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow, especially after taking the lead. They will now turn their attention to the league, hoping to bounce back quickly.
