Equatorial Guinea U23 delivered a ruthless away performance to defeat Sao Tome and Principe U23 3-0 in their Africa U23 Cup of Nations qualifier on September 28, 2026. The result leaves the hosts still searching for their first point of the campaign, while Equatorial Guinea strengthen their grip on a potential qualification spot.

Match Overview

Played under the lights at the Estádio Nacional 12 de Julho in Sao Tome, the match pitted two sides with contrasting ambitions. Sao Tome and Principe U23 hoped to use home advantage to spring a surprise against a more established Equatorial Guinea U23 outfit. However, the visitors controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, showcasing superior technical ability and tactical discipline. The 3-0 scoreline flattered the hosts if anything, as Equatorial Guinea created a host of additional chances throughout the ninety minutes.

Key Moments

Equatorial Guinea broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when a swift counter-attack ended with Santiago Nguema slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. The early goal forced Sao Tome to come out of their defensive shell, which only created more space for the visitors. Nguema doubled his tally in the 37th minute, rising highest to meet a corner from the right and heading powerfully into the bottom corner. The third goal arrived in the 68th minute, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback. Pedro Mba latched onto a through ball, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly finished into an empty net.

Tactical Story

Equatorial Guinea set up in a flexible 4-2-3-1 formation that transitioned into a 4-3-3 when in possession. Their midfield trio pressed aggressively, winning the ball back quickly and launching fast attacks. Sao Tome and Principe struggled to maintain possession, often resorting to long balls that were easily dealt with by the towering Equatorial Guinea centre-backs. The hosts' defensive line sat too deep, inviting pressure, and their inability to track runners from midfield proved costly for all three goals.

Standout Players

Santiago Nguema was the undisputed man of the match, scoring twice and causing problems all evening with his movement and finishing. Pedro Mba added a goal and an assist, while captain Emilio Ondo dictated the tempo from midfield. For Sao Tome and Principe, goalkeeper Jairson Silva made several smart saves to keep the score respectable, but he was left exposed by his defenders far too often.

Season Impact

With this victory, Equatorial Guinea U23 move to the top of their qualifying group, boosting their chances of reaching the U23 Africa Cup of Nations finals. For Sao Tome and Principe U23, the defeat leaves them rooted to the bottom of the standings and facing an uphill battle to qualify. The two teams will meet again in the reverse fixture, where Sao Tome will be desperate to restore some pride and keep their slim hopes alive.
