Botswana U23 2-1 Seychelles U23: Late Winner Seals Hard-Fought AFRNC U23 Victory

Botswana U23 edged Seychelles U23 2-1 in a keenly contested AFRNC U23 fixture on Tuesday night, with a late goal settling a match that swung one way and then the other. The win gives Botswana a crucial three points in their campaign and leaves Seychelles reflecting on a spirited display that ultimately ended in defeat.

Match Overview

Seychelles U23 started brightly and stunned their hosts by taking the lead in the 18th minute. A quick counter-attack ended with Ryan Henriette firing a low shot into the bottom corner, silencing the home support. Botswana responded well, gradually asserting control in midfield and creating chances of their own. Their persistence paid off in the 39th minute when Tshepo Mokoena rose highest to head home a corner and level the score.

The second half was a tense, tactical battle. Botswana dominated possession but found Seychelles difficult to break down. Clear chances were at a premium until the 78th minute, when Kagiso Ramotswa collected a pass on the edge of the box, took a touch to create space, and drilled a low effort into the net. The late goal proved decisive, and Botswana managed the closing stages professionally to secure the win.

Key Moments

• 39' – Botswana U23 1-1: Tshepo Mokoena connects with a corner and heads home.
• 62' – Chance for Botswana: A fierce shot from distance clips the outside of the post.
• 78' – Botswana U23 2-1: Kagiso Ramotswa drills a low shot into the bottom corner.

Tactical Story

Botswana U23 lined up in a 4-3-3 and looked to dominate the ball, using their full-backs to overload the wide areas. They struggled initially against Seychelles' compact 4-4-2 block, which limited space between the lines. However, once Botswana began to move the ball more quickly, they found gaps and created chances.

Seychelles were dangerous on the break and deserved their lead. Their defensive discipline was impressive for long spells, but as the game wore on, fatigue and the pressure of Botswana's possession told. The winning goal came from a moment of individual quality, but it was built on sustained territorial pressure. Botswana's ability to stay patient and find a late winner will please their coaching staff.

Standout Players

Kagiso Ramotswa (Botswana U23): The match-winner was lively throughout, constantly asking questions of the Seychelles defence. His composed finish was the highlight of the night.

Tshepo Mokoena (Botswana U23): Strong in the air and decisive with his equalising header, he also helped his team dominate set-pieces.

Ryan Henriette (Seychelles U23): The scorer of his team's goal was a constant threat on the counter and gave the Botswana defence problems with his direct running.

Tournament Implications

This result could prove pivotal in the AFRNC U23 group. Botswana U23 now have momentum and three points on the board, while Seychelles U23 will be encouraged by their performance despite the defeat. In youth tournaments, fine margins often decide progression, and Botswana's late winner may be remembered as one of the key moments of their campaign.

For Seychelles, the challenge is to bounce back quickly. They showed enough quality to suggest they can compete, but they will need to manage games better in the closing stages. Botswana, meanwhile, will look to build on this victory and strengthen their position in the standings.
