Tactical story

Neftchi Fergana lined up with a compact defensive shape and looked to attack through the wide channels, using the pace of their forwards to stretch Al Ittihad’s back line. The approach worked well in the first half, particularly when the hosts won the ball in midfield and moved forward quickly.

Al Ittihad controlled more of the ball and focused on creating overloads on the flanks. Their midfielders circulated possession patiently, drawing Neftchi out of position before switching play. The visitors’ substitutions in the second half added fresh energy in attacking areas, and that depth ultimately made the difference.

Standout players

Al Ittihad’s No. 10, Abdulrahman Al-Aboud, was the game’s most influential attacker, linking midfield and attack and playing a role in both goals. His movement between the lines caused Neftchi problems throughout the second half.

For Neftchi, goalkeeper Sardor Rakhimov produced several important saves and kept the score level during Al Ittihad’s strongest spell. Captain Jasur Khamidov also impressed with his leadership and defensive work, while the home side’s goalscorer, Sardor Tursunov, was a constant threat on the counter.

What it means

The result gives Al Ittihad three important points in the AFC Champions League Elite league phase and strengthens their position in the standings. For Neftchi Fergana, the defeat is a difficult one to take, but the performance showed they can compete against one of the competition’s stronger sides. The Uzbek club will need to turn narrow losses into points quickly as the league phase progresses.
