Key Moments

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Tasmania’s guards finding seams in the Southside defence and keeping the visitors close. Southside led by a narrow margin at the main break, but the third quarter proved decisive. A sustained run built on offensive rebounds, second-chance points and disciplined half-court execution pushed the lead into double digits. Tasmania attempted to respond with a quicker lineup, but Southside’s control of the glass and lower turnover count kept the comeback at arm’s length.

Tactical Story

Southside’s win was built on balance rather than one dominant individual performance. The home side shared the ball well, attacked closeouts and made Tasmania defend multiple actions on the same possession. Defensively, Southside adjusted its pick-and-roll coverage after the first quarter, forcing Tasmania into contested mid-range looks and limiting clean catch-and-shoot opportunities from the perimeter. Tasmania remained competitive when it played with pace, but Southside’s half-court discipline and rebounding edge proved to be the difference.

Standout Performers

Southside’s backcourt controlled the tempo and consistently found the right pass in transition, while the frontcourt delivered a strong rebounding performance at both ends. The bench also provided meaningful minutes, helping Southside maintain energy through the middle stages of the game. For Tasmania, the guard group was the most dangerous part of the offence, creating penetration and open looks, but the visitors could not string together enough defensive stops during Southside’s decisive third-quarter surge.

What It Means

The result gives Southside Women an important early win in the WNBL standings and a confidence boost ahead of a demanding stretch of fixtures. For Tasmania Jewels (W), the 91-77 loss offers clear areas for improvement, particularly defensive rebounding and late-possession execution. Both teams will now turn their attention to the next round, where Southside will look to build on its balanced attacking display and Tasmania will aim to convert its promising spells into a full four-quarter performance.
