The Chicago Sky continued their hot July run with a commanding 96–82 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks at Wintrust Arena on Saturday. The win was Chicago's fourth in five games and reinforced their reputation as one of the deepest teams in the WNBA this season.

Defense Sets the Tone

Chicago head coach Emre Vatansever preached defensive intensity after a lopsided loss earlier in the week, and his players responded. The Sky held the Sparks to just 36.7% shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Elizabeth Williams anchored the defense with three blocks and two steals, while Dana Evans harassed ball handlers on the perimeter.

Los Angeles started strong, with Dearica Hamby scoring eight early points to give the Sparks a 22–19 lead after the first quarter. But Chicago's second unit changed the game's complexion. Ruthy Hebard and Rebekah Gardner combined for 14 points off the bench in the second quarter, sparking a 28–14 run that put the Sky ahead for good.

Marina Mabrey Leads the Offense

Guard Marina Mabrey poured in a game-high 27 points, connecting on 6-of-10 from three-point range. Her scoring outburst came at crucial moments: whenever the Sparks attempted to cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter, Mabrey answered with a dagger triple. She also added 7 assists, showing her playmaking ability in pick-and-roll sets.

Forward Alanna Smith recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, providing the interior presence that Chicago needed against Los Angeles' taller frontline. Smith's activity on the offensive glass (5 offensive rebounds) led to multiple second-chance scores.

Sparks Struggle to Find Rhythm

Los Angeles, now 11–15 on the season, could not find consistent scoring outside of Hamby (21 points, 9 rebounds) and guard Jordin Canada (18 points, 6 assists). The Sparks shot just 5-of-21 from behind the arc, and their bench contributed only 14 points compared to Chicago's 38. Head coach Curt Miller cited a lack of ball movement and poor shot selection as key issues post-game.

The Sky improved to 17–10, solidifying third place in the Eastern Conference standings. The team's depth — with six players averaging double figures in July — makes them a dangerous potential playoff opponent.
