Benfica Women claimed a convincing 75-63 road victory over Sporting Cp Women in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol on 4 October 2026, turning a fiercely contested rivalry game into a controlled second-half display.

Match Overview

The Lisbon derby is always one of the most anticipated fixtures on the Portuguese women's basketball calendar, and this edition delivered the expected intensity early on. Sporting Cp Women started brightly in front of their home supporters, moving the ball well and attacking the rim, but Benfica Women gradually imposed their defensive identity and took command of the scoreboard.

A 12-point winning margin on the road in a rivalry fixture is a significant statement. Benfica's ability to weather the early storm and then pull away reflects a team with both quality and composure.

Key Moments

• Fast start from Sporting: The hosts came out aggressively, using home energy to build an early cushion.
• Benfica's response: A sustained run before the break swung the momentum and put the visitors in front.
• Third-quarter separation: Benfica tightened their defense, limiting second-chance opportunities and forcing turnovers that turned into easy points.
• Closing control: In the final period, Benfica managed the clock and knocked down free throws to deny any late comeback.

Tactical Story

Benfica Women's success was built on defensive discipline. They contested shots on the perimeter, collapsed efficiently on the ball inside, and controlled the defensive glass to limit Sporting's extra possessions. Offensively, they shared the ball well, generating open looks through drive-and-kick actions rather than relying on isolations.

Sporting Cp Women competed hard throughout and showed flashes of excellent basketball, particularly in transition, but their shooting cooled at key moments. Missed opportunities in the third quarter proved costly against an opponent efficient enough to punish them at the other end.

Standout Performers

For Benfica, the backcourt controlled the rhythm of the game, balancing scoring with playmaking, while their forwards did valuable work on the boards at both ends. Sporting's bright spots came from their energetic guard play and their willingness to attack the basket, even as the deficit grew.

Season Impact

Derby wins carry extra weight in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol, where Sporting and Benfica are long-standing rivals and perennial contenders. Taking this fixture on the road strengthens Benfica Women's position at the top end of the standings, while Sporting Cp Women will look to correct their third-quarter issues in the games ahead.
