CP Esgueira Women Edge Coimbra Women 70-66 in Tight Liga Feminina Battle

CP Esgueira Women held off a determined Coimbra Women side on Sunday, winning 70-66 in a Liga Feminina de Basquetebol contest that stayed competitive from the opening tip to the final buzzer. A decisive third-quarter surge gave the hosts the cushion they needed, and they protected it with composed play in the closing minutes.

The four-point final margin accurately reflects a game in which neither team ever led by more than a handful of possessions, and where execution in the half-court made all the difference.

Match Overview

Both sides came out with high energy, trading baskets through a quick, free-flowing first quarter. Coimbra Women's guards were sharp early, using ball screens to create driving lanes, while Esgueira relied on their inside presence and patient ball movement to stay level.

The second period turned into a defensive grind. Shots stopped falling at the same rate, and the game went to the locker room effectively even. After the break, Esgueira found another gear — and it proved to be the winning move.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

• First quarter: CP Esgueira Women 18-16 Coimbra Women — an even opening with both offences finding early rhythm.
• Second quarter: 14-18 — Coimbra's best stretch, built on perimeter shooting and active hands in passing lanes.
• Third quarter: 20-14 — the turning point, as Esgueira's defence generated stops and easy transition points.
• Fourth quarter: 18-18 — Coimbra pushed hard, but Esgueira answered every run with a big basket.

Where the Game Was Won

The third quarter decided this one. Esgueira Women came out of half-time with a more aggressive defensive scheme, switching screens and contesting Coimbra's perimeter looks with greater urgency. The result was a string of empty possessions for the visitors and a run of quick scores at the other end that flipped the momentum for good.

On the offensive end, Esgueira's willingness to attack the paint paid dividends. Their forwards drew contact, got to the free-throw line, and forced Coimbra into foul trouble that limited their rotation options late in the game.

Standout Performers

Esgueira's interior players were the foundation of the win, combining on the boards and finishing efficiently around the rim. Their point guard deserves credit for managing the tempo in the fourth quarter, slowing the game down when Coimbra tried to force a faster pace and finding the open shooter whenever the defence collapsed.

For Coimbra Women, the backcourt was the bright spot. Their shooting guard carried much of the scoring load and hit several contested shots in the final period to keep the game alive. A strong rebounding effort from their centre kept the visitors within reach, but the team's turnover count in the third quarter proved costly.

Season Context and Table Impact

Results like this carry real weight in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol, where the standings tighten quickly and head-to-head records can decide final positions. Esgueira Women's victory adds a valuable home win to their résumé and gives them confidence as the season progresses.

Coimbra Women leave with a narrow defeat but plenty of encouragement — they competed for forty minutes on the road against a well-organised opponent. If they can reduce their turnovers in key stretches and maintain their shooting form, they will win their share of these close games.

Both teams now turn their attention to the next round, with Esgueira looking to build a winning run and Coimbra aiming to bounce back quickly at home.
