CAB Madeira Women claimed an impressive 83-73 victory over Benfica Women in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol on Saturday, delivering a performance full of energy, execution, and composure down the stretch. Against one of the most recognizable names in Portuguese women's basketball, the Madeira side used a strong second-half surge to pull clear and secure a result that will be remembered around the league.

Match Overview

The contest tipped off at 18:00 on October 17, 2026, and lived up to its billing as a meeting between a well-drilled home team and a Benfica side with plenty of quality. The first half was closely fought, with both teams trading runs and neither able to establish a firm grip on the scoreboard. But after the interval, CAB Madeira Women found another gear, tightening their defense and converting opportunities at the offensive end to build a lead that would hold.

Key Moments

• Opening quarter: Both teams started with intent, trading baskets in an up-tempo opening that set the tone for an entertaining night.
• Second quarter: Benfica briefly threatened to take control, but CAB Madeira responded with timely shot-making to stay within touching distance at the break.
• Third quarter: The decisive stretch. The hosts ramped up their defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and converting them into quick points to open up a working margin.
• Fourth quarter: Benfica pushed to close the gap, but CAB Madeira knocked down key shots and protected the ball late to seal an 83-73 win.

Tactical Story

CAB Madeira's success was built on two pillars: defensive intensity and shot selection. Their ability to disrupt Benfica's rhythm with aggressive perimeter defense forced the visitors into difficult looks, while at the other end the home side played with patience and confidence, working the ball into good positions rather than forcing the issue.

Benfica showed flashes of their quality, particularly in transition and through individual scoring bursts, but they struggled to sustain momentum against a CAB Madeira team that answered every run with one of their own. The rebounding edge and a superior free-throw performance in the closing minutes ultimately tilted the game decisively in the hosts' favor.

Standout Performers

The victory was a genuine team effort, with balanced scoring across the roster keeping Benfica guessing throughout. CAB Madeira's guards dictated tempo on both ends, while the frontcourt held their own on the boards and contributed crucial points in the paint. The bench also made its mark, providing energy and defensive stability during important spells.

For Benfica Women, there were positives to take despite the defeat — moments of sharp ball movement and competitive resilience — but the loss highlights areas to refine, particularly late-game execution and defensive rebounding, as the season progresses.

Table and Season Impact

This 83-73 result is a statement win for CAB Madeira Women in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol, boosting their confidence and strengthening their standing as they look to build momentum in the coming weeks. Beating a club of Benfica's stature carries extra significance and underlines the competitiveness of the league this season.

For Benfica Women, the focus now shifts to the next fixture as they look to bounce back and reassert themselves in the standings. With games coming thick and fast, both teams will be eager to build on the lessons of an entertaining, hard-fought encounter in Madeira.
