Gdessa Barreiro Women earned a valuable 78-72 road win over Basquete de Barcelos Women in the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol on October 26, 2026. Barreiro’s perimeter shooting and rebounding dominance in the second half proved decisive, as they erased a five-point halftime deficit and held off a late Barcelos rally. The victory lifts Barreiro in the standings and hands Barcelos a disappointing home loss.

Match Overview

Barcelos started strong, using aggressive drives and quick ball movement to build a 22-17 lead after the first quarter. Barreiro responded in the second quarter with a 10-2 run, but Barcelos answered with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 38-33 lead into halftime. The game shifted in the third quarter when Barreiro’s defense forced five turnovers and held Barcelos to 12 points, turning the deficit into a six-point lead entering the final period.

Key Moments

• Third-quarter lockdown: Barreiro held Barcelos to 12 points in the third quarter, forcing five turnovers and limiting them to 4-of-15 shooting.
• Fourth-quarter three-point barrage: With the game tied at 66, Barreiro hit three three-pointers in 90 seconds—two from Carolina Mendes and one from Rita Fonseca—to take a 75-68 lead.
• Rebounding edge: Barreiro grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, leading to 16 second-chance points, compared to just 6 for Barcelos.

Tactical Story

Barreiro’s halftime adjustment to a smaller lineup paid dividends. By moving Fonseca to center and spreading the floor with four shooters, they forced Barcelos’s bigs to defend in space. This created driving lanes for Mendes and opened up offensive rebounding opportunities. Barcelos struggled to adjust, often leaving the weak side vulnerable to backdoor cuts.

Defensively, Barreiro switched to a 1-3-1 zone in the third quarter that confused Barcelos’s half-court offense. Barcelos’s guards were forced into lateral passes, and Barreiro’s wings jumped the passing lanes for steals. The zone also helped Barreiro control the defensive glass, as their bigs were positioned closer to the basket.

Standout Players

Carolina Mendes led Barreiro with 24 points, including 5-of-9 from three-point range, and added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Rita Fonseca posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, controlling the paint. For Barcelos, Sofia Almeida scored 18 points and dished 7 assists, but she committed 5 turnovers and was held scoreless in the final four minutes.

Season Impact

The win moves Gdessa Barreiro Women up the Liga Feminina de Basquetebol table, keeping them in the hunt for a playoff spot. Barcelos, meanwhile, misses a chance to gain ground on the teams above them and will need to improve their late-game execution. Barreiro’s next game is at home, where they have been strong, while Barcelos faces a tough road test.
