Proteas Voulas Women 64-71 Giannina Women: Giannina Secure Valuable Road Win in Greek A1 Women’s Basket League

Giannina Women claimed an important 71-64 road victory over Proteas Voulas Women on Sunday, 4 October 2026, in the Greek A1 Women’s Basket League. The seven-point win was built on disciplined defense, timely three-point shooting and a composed fourth-quarter finish that silenced the home crowd in Voula.

Match Overview

Giannina started the game with confidence, moving the ball patiently and attacking the basket with purpose. Proteas Voulas stayed close through the first half, but the visitors always seemed to have an answer. By the final buzzer, Giannina had forced 18 turnovers and held Proteas to just 37.7% shooting from the field.

The result gives Giannina an early-season road win that could prove crucial in the Greek A1 Women’s Basket League standings. Proteas Voulas, meanwhile, will be frustrated by their perimeter shooting and missed opportunities in the third quarter.

First Half: Giannina Take a Narrow Lead

The opening quarter was tight, with Giannina edging ahead 20-18 behind balanced scoring and aggressive drives. Proteas responded in the second period, using their inside presence to stay within touching distance, but Giannina’s guards continued to find seams in the defense.

At halftime, Giannina led 37-33. The visitors had shot 44% from the field and had already recorded 8 steals, disrupting Proteas’ half-court sets and creating extra possessions. Proteas, on the other hand, struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 2-of-9 three-point attempts in the first half.

Second Half: The Decisive Run

The third quarter proved decisive. Giannina opened the period with a 10-0 run, extending their lead to 47-33 and forcing Proteas into a timeout. The surge was sparked by defensive stops and quick transition baskets, with Giannina’s guards repeatedly beating the defense down the floor.

Proteas fought back late in the third, cutting the deficit to 56-49 by the end of the quarter, but they could never string together enough stops to truly threaten. Giannina managed the fourth quarter expertly, slowing the tempo, drawing fouls and knocking down free throws to preserve the win.

Giannina’s zone defense was the difference. Proteas Voulas struggled to penetrate the packed lane, settling for contested three-pointers and long two-point jumpers. Giannina also dominated the turnover battle, scoring 20 points off Proteas’ 18 turnovers.

Offensively, Giannina’s balance was key. They finished with 16 assists on 26 made field goals and shot 7-of-19 from three-point range. Proteas will need to improve their ball movement and outside shooting if they are to climb the Greek A1 Women’s Basket League table.

Standings and Season Impact

The win lifts Giannina Women into a promising early position in the Greek A1 Women’s Basket League standings, with a road victory that could boost their confidence for the rest of the campaign. For Proteas Voulas Women, the loss highlights areas to address, particularly perimeter shooting and decision-making against pressure defense.

Giannina will look to build on this performance in their next fixture, while Proteas will return to the training floor focused on reducing turnovers and creating better looks for their shooters. Based on this showing, Giannina appear ready to challenge for a playoff spot, while Proteas have work to do to find consistency.
