Key Moments

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter. Leading 34-26 at halftime, Malvin opened the second half with a 10-0 run over three minutes, effectively putting the game out of reach. Guard Valentina González ignited the surge with a three-pointer and a steal that led to a fast-break layup. Defensor Sporting called timeout, but the momentum had already shifted. Malvin's defense continued to smother every offensive set, and the lead never dipped below 14 points the rest of the way.

Defensor's best moment came late in the first quarter when they briefly tied the game at 10-10 behind a quick 6-0 spurt. But Malvin responded with an 8-2 run to end the period and never trailed again.

Tactical Story

Malvin's 2-3 zone was the difference. They clogged the paint, contested every jump shot, and forced Defensor into 20 turnovers, which they converted into 24 points. On the boards, Malvin held a 38-30 advantage, with 12 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end. Their half-court offense was patient and efficient, shooting 46% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc.

Defensor Sporting struggled to find any offensive flow. Their leading scorer, Florencia Somma, finished with 16 points but needed 18 shots to get there. The team managed just 8 assists on 18 made field goals, a clear sign of their isolation-heavy approach. Defensor also shot a woeful 4-of-20 from three-point range, often settling for contested looks late in the shot clock.

Season Impact and Championship Standings

With the win, Malvin Women solidify their position atop the Uruguay Women's Championship standings. At 9-2, they have now won five consecutive games and look like the team to beat. Their balanced scoring and elite defense have been the hallmarks of their season. Defensor Sporting, now 5-6, sit in 5th place and face an uphill battle to climb into the top three before the playoffs.

Up next, Malvin Women host Yale Women in a potential trap game, while Defensor Sporting travel to face Hebraica y Macabi Women. For Defensor, the focus will be on ball security and finding more offensive balance. If they can reduce turnovers and get their guards going, they still have time to turn their season around. But against a team as locked in as Malvin, there was little they could do on this night.
