The 2026 Uruguay Women’s Championship delivered a stark statement of intent from Defensor Sporting Women on July 24, as they dismantled Club Atletico Yale Women 94–36 at the Yale home court. From the opening tip, the visitors imposed their defensive intensity and fast-break efficiency, turning the contest into a one-sided affair that showcased the gulf in class between the league’s elite and a struggling Yale side.

Match Overview

Defensor Sporting entered the fixture riding a strong start to the season, and their aggressive man-to-man defense suffocated Yale’s ball movement from the first quarter. The home side managed only 36 total points, their lowest output of the campaign, while Defensor’s offense flowed through a balanced attack that saw five players reach double figures. The 58-point margin of victory is the largest recorded in the championship so far this season.

Key Moments

• First-quarter blitz: Defensor opened with a 28–6 run, capitalizing on six Yale turnovers in the opening eight minutes.
• Second-quarter separation: A 22–8 stretch in the second period pushed the lead beyond 30 points, effectively ending the contest before halftime.
• Bench dominance: Defensor’s reserves outscored Yale’s bench 38–12, a reflection of the visitors’ superior depth.
• Fourth-quarter finish: With the game already decided, Defensor still outscored Yale 24–10 in the final period, refusing to take their foot off the gas.

Tactical Story

Yale’s 2–3 zone was exploited relentlessly by Defensor’s sharp perimeter shooting and quick interior passing. The away side shot 47% from the field, while Yale managed only 28%. Defensor also dominated the glass, grabbing 52 rebounds to Yale’s 28, which translated into 22 second-chance points. Yale’s inability to handle Defensor’s full-court press led to 19 turnovers, many of which were converted into easy layups on the other end.

Standout Players

Defensor’s point guard Camila Rodríguez orchestrated the tempo with 18 points, 8 assists, and 5 steals, earning player of the game honors. Forward Lucía Martínez added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Sofía Pereira knocked down four three-pointers on her way to 16 points. For Yale, forward María Noé was the lone bright spot, contributing 11 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Table and Season Impact

The victory keeps Defensor Sporting Women (9–2) firmly in the top two of the Uruguay Women’s Championship standings, trailing only league leaders Malvín. For Club Atletico Yale Women (2–9), the defeat extends a four-game losing streak and leaves them in 10th place, now four points adrift of the playoff positions. The result also strengthens Defensor’s goal difference advantage, which could prove crucial in the tight race for the regular-season title.
