25 de Agosto protected home advantage in the Uruguay Tercera de Ascenso with a hard-earned 74-65 victory over Defensores de Maroñas, a result that strengthens their position in the promotion chase and hands Maroñas another frustrating road defeat in a season defined by tight margins.

Match Overview

Played in front of a compact but vocal home gym, the game followed a pattern familiar to followers of Uruguay's third-tier basketball: low-scoring, physical, and decided by whichever side could string together three or four clean possessions when the legs started to go. 25 de Agosto controlled the tempo from the opening minutes, pushing the ball early and forcing Defensores de Maroñas into a half-court game they never fully looked comfortable in.

The hosts led by seven at the first break and stretched the advantage to double digits midway through the second quarter, using a compact zone to take away the visitors' preferred drive-and-kick routes. Maroñas responded with a better third quarter, cutting the deficit to five at one stage, but they could never land the decisive run that would have flipped the momentum of the contest.

Key Moments

• First quarter – the tone-setter: 25 de Agosto opened with a 12-4 surge built on second-chance points and aggressive transition finishing, forcing an early timeout from the Maroñas bench.
• Late second quarter – the separation: A quick 8-0 burst just before halftime pushed the lead to its widest point of the night, giving the hosts a cushion they defended for the rest of the match.
• Fourth quarter – the closing answer: After Defensores de Maroñas trimmed the margin to five, 25 de Agosto answered with back-to-back baskets in the paint and then closed the game at the free-throw line.

Standout Performers

For the winners, the interior pairing did most of the heavy lifting, combining for a large share of the team's 74 points while also dominating the defensive glass. The point guard controlled the clock intelligently in the final six minutes, slowing possessions rather than allowing Maroñas to play the up-tempo game it needed.

Defensores de Maroñas will take encouragement from their third-quarter fightback, which was driven by perimeter shooting and a more committed approach on the offensive boards. Their problem was efficiency: several good looks in the fourth quarter rimmed out, and the visitors finished the night well below their season shooting average.

Standings and Season Impact

The win moves 25 de Agosto into a healthier position in the Tercera de Ascenso table, where promotion places are typically separated by only a handful of victories and head-to-head records can decide final standings. For Defensores de Maroñas, the loss is a missed opportunity to climb toward the leading group, and it heightens the importance of their upcoming home fixtures.

What's Next

25 de Agosto will look to carry this defensive standard into their next outing, while Defensores de Maroñas must address a recurring scoring drought that has cost them in tight road games. In a division as compressed as the Tercera de Ascenso, a 74-65 result like this one often carries consequences that last well beyond the final buzzer.
