Royal Hali Gaziantep opened their Turkish Basketball First League campaign with a nerve-shredding 91-89 victory over Genclik Final Spor on September 19, 2026, in a game that came down to the final possession. The home side led for much of the night but had to survive a late barrage from the visitors, who erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter before falling just short at the buzzer.

Match Overview

Played at a lively Gaziantep arena, the contest was everything a First League opener should be: fast, physical, and decided by execution under pressure. Royal Hali Gaziantep shot the ball efficiently from the perimeter early, building a 27-21 lead after the first quarter. Genclik Final Spor responded with a more aggressive defensive approach in the second, forcing turnovers and converting them into transition points. By halftime, the margin had been trimmed to 48-45.

The third quarter belonged to the hosts. A 12-2 run midway through the period pushed the lead to 68-55, and it looked as though Gaziantep might pull away for a comfortable win. But Genclik Final Spor refused to fade, closing the quarter on an 11-4 spurt to enter the final ten minutes trailing 72-66.

Key Moments

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Genclik Final Spor tied the game at 86-86 with just over a minute remaining after a corner three and a pair of free throws. Royal Hali Gaziantep answered with a patient possession that ended in a mid-range jumper from their leading scorer, restoring a two-point edge. The visitors had one last chance to win or tie, but a contested three-pointer rimmed out as the horn sounded.

• First-quarter spark: Gaziantep knocked down four threes in the opening seven minutes.
• Third-quarter run: A 12-2 surge gave the hosts their largest lead at 68-55.
• Clutch finish: A go-ahead jumper in the final 20 seconds proved to be the game-winner.

Tactical Story

Royal Hali Gaziantep’s half-court offense relied on high ball screens and quick ball reversals, which repeatedly opened driving lanes against Genclik Final Spor’s switching defense. The hosts also dominated the defensive glass in the first three quarters, limiting second-chance opportunities. Genclik Final Spor adjusted late by going small, spreading the floor and attacking the rim off the dribble. That change nearly stole the game, but Gaziantep’s ability to slow the tempo in the final minute made the difference.

Standout Players

Gaziantep’s starting backcourt combined for 41 points, with the point guard dictating pace and finishing with a double-double of 18 points and 11 assists. Their athletic forward added 16 points and 9 rebounds, including a crucial offensive board in the closing seconds. For Genclik Final Spor, the shooting guard poured in a game-high 26 points, while their center contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.

Season Impact

The win gives Royal Hali Gaziantep an early foothold in the Turkish Basketball First League standings and valuable momentum ahead of a demanding road stretch. For Genclik Final Spor, the narrow defeat is a moral victory but also a reminder that closing games on the road requires sharper late-game execution. Both teams will take lessons from a contest that felt more like a playoff battle than a September fixture.
