Gallardo Women edged Burhaniye Belediye Women 78-76 in a tense Turkish Women’s Basketball League matchup on Friday night, winning a game that stayed undecided until the final possession. The home side trailed for long stretches but found the decisive run in the fourth quarter, turning a narrow deficit into a two-point victory in front of their supporters.

A tight contest decided late

The game had the feel of a playoff encounter from the opening tip. Neither team led by more than seven points, and the lead changed hands 12 times. Gallardo Women shot 44% from the field, while Burhaniye Belediye Women finished at 43%, but the difference came at the free-throw line and on the offensive glass. Gallardo made 17 of 21 free throws, including four in the final minute, while Burhaniye converted 12 of 17.

Burhaniye Belediye looked the more settled team early, using patient half-court possessions and a strong interior game to build a 21-18 lead after the first quarter. They stretched the advantage to 39-35 by halftime, with their guards finding gaps in Gallardo’s switching defense. But the home team stayed within reach and never let the game slip away.

How the game unfolded

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish control. Burhaniye led 58-54 entering the final period, but Gallardo Women responded with increased defensive pressure. A 6-0 run midway through the fourth gave the hosts their first lead since the opening quarter, and the game became a possession-by-possession battle over the final five minutes.

With 1:42 remaining, Gallardo forced a turnover and converted it into a fast-break layup to go ahead 72-70. Burhaniye answered with a three-pointer from the wing, but Gallardo’s composure at the line proved decisive. The home side scored its final six points from the charity stripe, and a last-second Burhaniye three-point attempt rimmed out, sealing the two-point win.

Key moments and tactical shift

The turning point was Gallardo’s decision to switch to a compact zone defense in the fourth quarter. The change disrupted Burhaniye’s rhythm and forced five turnovers in the final 10 minutes. Gallardo also limited second-chance points after allowing several early offensive rebounds. On offense, the hosts attacked the paint more aggressively, drawing fouls and reaching the bonus with over four minutes still on the clock.

• Fourth-quarter scoring: Gallardo 24, Burhaniye 18.
• Turnovers forced in the final period: Gallardo 5.
• Free throws: Gallardo 17-of-21; Burhaniye 12-of-17.
• Largest lead: Burhaniye by 7 in the second quarter.

Standout performers

Ece Aydın led Gallardo Women with 21 points and eight rebounds, consistently finding ways to score in traffic. Selin Korkmaz added 17 points, including two crucial fourth-quarter baskets, while point guard Merve Demir controlled the tempo with nine assists and three steals. Burhaniye Belediye’s Deniz Yılmaz was the game’s top scorer with 24 points, and center Ayşe Kurt contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort.

What it means in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League

The win gives Gallardo Women an important confidence boost and valuable momentum in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League standings. For Burhaniye Belediye Women, the narrow defeat will sting, but the performance showed they can compete on the road against a strong opponent. Both teams now turn their attention to the next round, with Gallardo hoping this late-game execution becomes a trademark and Burhaniye looking to tighten their fourth-quarter defense.
