SAV Vacallo Basket opened their Switzerland NLB campaign with a convincing 80-66 victory over Geneve Lions U23, controlling the contest from the middle of the first quarter and never allowing the young Geneva side to build a genuine comeback. The 14-point margin reflected a performance built on defensive pressure, efficient shot selection and a decisive edge on the boards, and it gave the Ticino club an important early win in the race for playoff positioning.

Match Overview

Playing in front of their home crowd, Vacallo set the tone early with aggressive on-ball defence that forced the Lions' development squad into hurried decisions in the half-court. The home side led 21-16 after ten minutes, stretched the advantage to 41-31 by half-time, and then managed the game intelligently after the break. Geneva's under-23 unit, which leans heavily on pace and transition scoring, found precious little room to run, and every time they trimmed the deficit to single digits Vacallo answered with a composed offensive possession.

Quarter-by-Quarter

• Q1: Vacallo 21-16 — early 8-0 run from the hosts sets the tone
• Q2: Vacallo 20-15 — half-court defence forces turnovers, lead grows to ten at the break
• Q3: Vacallo 19-17 — Lions U23 push the tempo, but the margin holds
• Q4: Vacallo 20-18 — hosts close it out from the free-throw line

Key Moments

The game's defining stretch came midway through the second quarter. With the score at 27-22, Vacallo rattled off nine unanswered points in under three minutes, turning defence into quick offence and forcing the visitors into a timeout. A second decisive burst arrived early in the fourth, when the Lions had cut the gap to seven and briefly looked capable of making it a one-possession game. Vacallo responded with a three-pointer from the wing and two converted trips to the line, pushing the lead back into double figures for good.

Standout Performers

Vacallo's backcourt dictated the rhythm of the night. Veteran guard Marco Bernasconi was the steadying hand, organising the offence in the half-court and knocking down timely shots whenever Geneva threatened, while import forward Devin Marsh gave the hosts a physical presence inside, finishing around the rim and drawing fouls at a high rate. On the visiting side, Luca Perrin was the bright spot, attacking off the dribble and keeping the Lions within touching distance during the third quarter.

What the Result Means in the NLB Standings

For SAV Vacallo, the win is more than a single result — it sets a defensive standard for the season. NLB games are frequently decided by rebounding and turnover margins, and Vacallo won both categories comfortably on the night, holding a clear edge on the glass while converting Geneva's mistakes into points at the other end. For Geneve Lions U23, the outing is a familiar story for a development side: flashes of quality, but too many empty possessions against a composed opponent. The U23 programme exists to feed players into the Lions' top team, and games like this are exactly the kind of test that accelerates that progression.

Looking Ahead

Vacallo will look to carry this momentum into their next NLB fixture, where another disciplined defensive display would confirm that the opening-night performance was a template rather than an outlier. The Lions U23, meanwhile, will focus on cutting down turnovers and improving their half-court execution — the two areas that separated them from a more experienced opponent in this one.
