Basket Cartagena took care of business at home on Sunday, closing out a hard-fought 93-86 victory over Iraurgi SB in Spain's Segunda FEB. The win keeps the Murcian side firmly in the conversation near the top of the table and underlined once again why they are such a difficult opponent to beat on their own floor.

A Tight Contest That Cartagena Controlled When It Mattered

For much of the first half this looked like a game that would go down to the final possession. Iraurgi SB, one of the most disciplined teams in the Basque Country, moved the ball well in the half court and found open looks against Cartagena's early switching defense. The visitors knocked down several perimeter shots to stay level, and neither side was able to build a lead larger than a handful of points before the break.

The third quarter changed the rhythm of the game. Cartagena cranked up the pressure on the ball, forced a string of rushed decisions, and converted those turnovers into transition points. A quick 12-2 run midway through the period pushed the lead into double digits, and the home crowd inside the Cartagena pavilion sensed a comfortable finish.

Key Moments of the Game

• Late second quarter: Cartagena closed the half with a small surge to take a narrow advantage into the locker room.
• Mid-third quarter: The decisive 12-2 burst, built on defensive stops and fast-break baskets, gave the home side breathing room.
• Final three minutes: Iraurgi cut the deficit to five after a couple of quick threes, but Cartagena's composure at the free-throw line closed the door.

Tactical Story

Cartagena's success came from balance. Rather than relying on a single scorer, the hosts spread the offense across the rotation, with the guards probing off the pick-and-roll and the forwards crashing the offensive glass for second-chance points. That depth proved decisive in the fourth quarter, when legs began to tire and shot quality mattered more than shot volume.

Iraurgi SB, for their part, were never out of the fight. Their half-court execution was sharp, particularly out of timeout plays, and their shooting kept the margin respectable until the closing stages. The problem was the defensive end: they struggled to contain dribble penetration and gave up too many easy looks at the rim.

Standings Impact

The result strengthens Basket Cartagena's position in the Segunda FEB table and adds another valuable home win to a résumé that is starting to look like a genuine promotion push. For Iraurgi SB, it is a frustrating away defeat — the kind of game that can be decided by a two-minute lapse against a well-organized team. Both clubs now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures, with Cartagena hoping to carry this defensive intensity on the road and Iraurgi looking to bounce back quickly at home.
