Athlete Celje Women's 72-50 Ilirija Women: Champions Deliver Controlled Performance in Slovenia Woman's Div 1

Athlete Celje Women's continued their strong form in the Slovenia Woman's Div 1 with a composed 72-50 victory over Ilirija Women. The 22-point win was built on defence and rebounding, as Celje controlled the paint, limited Ilirija's second-chance opportunities and gradually pulled away over the four quarters.

Ilirija competed hard and stayed within reach for much of the first half, but Celje's depth and physicality told in the end.

Game Overview

Celje never trailed at any point and led from the opening minutes. Their defensive approach was disciplined: protect the rim, contest every shot and force Ilirija into difficult late-clock attempts. On the offensive end, Celje shared the ball well, attacked the offensive glass and consistently found scoring opportunities in the paint.

Ilirija's best stretch came in the second quarter, when they briefly cut the deficit to single digits with a run of good shooting, but they could not sustain that level against Celje's defensive pressure.

How the Game Unfolded

• First quarter: Celje 20-12 — a strong start, driven by defensive stops and quick transition points.
• Second quarter: Celje 18-13 — Ilirija's best spell, but the hosts kept control.
• Third quarter: Celje 17-14 — a competitive period with both teams trading baskets.
• Fourth quarter: Celje 17-11 — the hosts closed it out comfortably from the free-throw line and the post.

Key Moments

The decisive moment came at the start of the fourth quarter. Leading by 16, Celje opened the final period with six unanswered points, extending the advantage beyond 20 and effectively ending Ilirija's hopes of a comeback. The sequence featured a block at one end and a converted and-one at the other, a perfect snapshot of Celje's two-way control.

Earlier, late in the second quarter, Celje had answered Ilirija's best run with a quick 6-0 burst of their own, ensuring the visitors never went into the locker room with real momentum.

Tactical Story

Celje's game plan prioritised interior defence. Their bigs hedged hard on ball screens, forcing Ilirija's guards away from the rim and toward contested pull-up jumpers. The hosts' defensive rebounding was excellent throughout, limiting Ilirija to very few second-chance points — a key factor in a game where both teams struggled at times from the perimeter.

Offensively, Celje mixed post entries with dribble penetration, and their guards did a good job of finding the open shooter when Ilirija collapsed on the ball. The hosts also drew fouls consistently, finishing the game with a solid advantage at the free-throw line.

Standout Performers

Celje's centre was the anchor of the performance, controlling the boards at both ends and scoring efficiently around the rim. The starting point guard dictated tempo and delivered a composed all-around display, while a bench contributor provided a valuable scoring spark in the second and third quarters. For Ilirija Women, the shooting guard was the standout, attacking with confidence and keeping her side competitive through the middle stages of the game.

What It Means for the Standings

The win reinforces Athlete Celje Women's position among the leading sides in the Slovenia Woman's Div 1 and adds a solid margin to their point differential. Ilirija Women leave with plenty to work on, particularly in half-court offence, but their second-quarter display showed they can compete with strong opposition when their shooting is flowing. Both teams will now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures, with Celje looking to build momentum and Ilirija searching for greater consistency on the road.
