Athlete Celje Women's produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat Ilirija Women 78-60 in their Slovenia Women's Basketball Cup clash on 24 September 2026. The win sends Celje through to the next round of the competition, while Ilirija exit with credit after a battling display against one of the country's most established women's basketball programs.

Played at the Ilirija Sports Hall in Ljubljana, the game followed a familiar pattern for followers of Slovenian women's basketball: Ilirija started with energy and ambition, but Celje's depth, defensive discipline, and big-game experience gradually took control. A dominant second quarter proved decisive, and although Ilirija never stopped fighting, they could not close the gap in the second half.

Match Overview

Celje won the opening tip and immediately looked to push the tempo, but Ilirija matched them basket for basket in the early minutes. The first quarter ended 18-14 in Celje's favour, with both teams trading baskets from the perimeter and in transition. Ilirija's guards attacked the rim with confidence, while Celje relied on patient half-court execution and offensive rebounds to create second-chance points.

The second quarter is where the game tilted permanently. Celje outscored Ilirija 22-16 over the next ten minutes, turning a four-point lead into a 40-30 advantage at halftime. Their defensive pressure forced Ilirija into hurried shots and a series of turnovers that Celje converted into easy fast-break points. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, the visitors had established a double-digit cushion that they would never surrender.

Ilirija came out of the locker room with renewed intensity, and for a brief spell in the third quarter they reduced the deficit to single digits. But Celje responded with a 10-2 run of their own, restoring a comfortable lead. The third quarter finished 60-45, and the final period was a controlled, professional close-out from the favourites, who emptied their bench in the closing minutes and still managed to extend the margin to 78-60 by the final whistle.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

• First quarter: Celje 18-14 Ilirija
• Second quarter: Celje 22-16 Ilirija (Halftime: 40-30)
• Third quarter: Celje 20-15 Ilirija (End of Q3: 60-45)
• Fourth quarter: Celje 18-15 Ilirija (Final: 78-60)

Key Moments

The game's defining stretch came midway through the second quarter. With Ilirija trailing 24-20 and looking to build momentum, Celje's backcourt intercepted two consecutive passes and converted both into layups. That four-point swing forced an Ilirija timeout, but the momentum had already shifted. Celje closed the half on a 12-4 run, capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the wing that sent them into the break with a ten-point lead and a visible sense of control.

Early in the third quarter, Ilirija's centre sparked a mini-comeback with a pair of strong post moves and a blocked shot on the defensive end. The home crowd found its voice, and the lead briefly shrank to eight points. But Celje's captain steadied the ship with a mid-range jumper and then found a cutting teammate for an easy basket. That sequence killed Ilirija's momentum, and the favourites cruised from there.

Tactical Story

Celje's game plan was built on defensive versatility and rebounding. They switched aggressively on screens, denied Ilirija's primary shooters clean looks from beyond the arc, and dominated the defensive glass. Their transition attack was particularly effective: whenever Ilirija missed a shot, Celje's guards pushed the ball immediately, often beating the defence down the floor for uncontested layups. That fast-break advantage accounted for a significant portion of their 78 points.

Ilirija, by contrast, relied heavily on isolation plays and individual drives. Without a consistent outside shooting threat, they struggled to stretch Celje's defence, which packed the paint and forced contested mid-range attempts. Ilirija's coach tried a zone defence in the second half to slow the game down, and it worked briefly, but Celje's ball movement and patient passing eventually carved it open. Celje also won the rebounding battle decisively, limiting Ilirija to very few second-chance opportunities.

Standout Players

For Athlete Celje, the backcourt duo set the tone on both ends. One guard finished with a game-high 19 points and 6 assists, controlling the tempo and making smart decisions in pick-and-roll situations. The other added 14 points, including three three-pointers, and provided relentless on-ball pressure that disrupted Ilirija's offensive rhythm. Up front, Celje's centre contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the defence and cleaning up the boards.<
