Ajdovščina produced one of the most emphatic performances of the round in the Slovenia Basketball Cup, dismantling Geoplin Slovan 87-52 on 7 October 2026. A dominant first half effectively settled the tie long before the final buzzer, sending the visitors through with a commanding margin.

Match overview

Cup basketball is often about survival, but Ajdovščina turned this fixture into a statement of intent. They controlled the game from the opening minutes, dictated the tempo, and never allowed Geoplin Slovan to establish any rhythm on either end of the floor. By halftime the contest was already heavily tilted in the visitors' favour.

• Final score: Geoplin Slovan 52, Ajdovščina 87
• Competition: Slovenia Basketball Cup
• Quarter scores: 14-24, 12-22, 13-21, 13-20
• Winning margin: 35 points

How the game unfolded

Ajdovščina set the tone immediately, opening a 24-14 lead after the first quarter with sharp ball movement and aggressive transition play. The second period was even more one-sided: a 22-12 run pushed the advantage past 20 points at the interval and forced the hosts into a series of hurried, low-percentage attempts.

There was no let-up after halftime. Ajdovščina's defense continued to deny clean looks, and their offense kept producing efficient possessions, extending the lead to 67-39 after three quarters. The final ten minutes were played with the result beyond doubt, but the visitors maintained their intensity and closed out a thoroughly professional 87-52 victory.

Key moments

• First quarter: A quick Ajdovščina surge gave them a double-digit lead they would never surrender.
• Second quarter: The decisive run of the game pushed the margin beyond 20 before halftime.
• Third quarter: Any faint hope of a Slovan comeback was extinguished as the lead approached 30.

Tactical story

The game was won with defense. Ajdovščina's disciplined half-court setup cut off driving lanes and forced Geoplin Slovan into difficult perimeter shots, resulting in a low shooting percentage and very few second-chance opportunities. On the other end, Ajdovščina attacked patiently, moving the ball until an open shooter appeared and converting consistently around the rim.

Rebounding was another clear separator. The visitors controlled the defensive glass, limited Slovan's extra possessions, and repeatedly turned stops into quick points in transition — the classic recipe for a blowout in cup competition.

Standout performances

Ajdovščina's balanced scoring was the hallmark of the night, with contributions across the rotation rather than reliance on a single scorer. Their backcourt controlled the pace, while the frontcourt dominated the paint at both ends. Geoplin Slovan, meanwhile, struggled to find an offensive spark, with their best moments coming in isolated individual plays rather than sustained team execution.

What it means

The 35-point win sends Ajdovščina into the next round of the Slovenia Basketball Cup with momentum and a healthy dose of confidence, and it signals that they intend to be a serious factor in the competition. For Geoplin Slovan, the exit is a disappointment, but the margin offers clear lessons about defensive discipline and shot selection that will matter in league play.

Cup runs are built on performances like this — clinical, controlled and ruthless from the opening tip. Ajdovščina delivered exactly that.
