ONYX Levice opened their Slovenska Basketbalova Liga campaign with a convincing 91-75 victory over Handlova, turning a competitive first half into a comfortable home win at the Hala ONYX in Levice. The 16-point margin flattered the visitors far less than the scoreboard suggests, as Levice controlled the tempo from the second quarter onward and never allowed Handlova back within striking distance down the stretch.

Match Overview

Played on 27 September 2026, the fixture pitted one of Slovak basketball's most consistent contenders against a Handlova side known for its scrappy, high-effort approach. Levice entered as clear favourites and played like it, dictating the pace of the game with aggressive transition basketball and disciplined half-court execution. Handlova competed hard early but struggled to match Levice's depth once the home bench entered the rotation.

How the Game Unfolded

The opening quarter was the tightest stretch of the night, with both teams trading baskets and Handlova finding success through patient ball movement and mid-range shooting. Levice led by a slender margin at the first break, but the warning signs were already there: they were winning the rebound battle and generating second-chance opportunities.

The second quarter is where the game turned. Levice tightened their perimeter defence, forced a string of hurried Handlova possessions, and converted turnovers into easy points at the other end. A run that stretched past double digits pushed the lead into comfortable territory before halftime, and Handlova's offence never fully recovered its rhythm.

After the interval, Levice managed the game expertly. Rather than chasing a spectacular blowout, they kept the ball moving, attacked mismatches inside, and rotated their bench liberally. Handlova showed character with a brief third-quarter surge, but every time they threatened to cut the deficit, Levice answered with a composed scoring sequence.

Key Factors in the Win

• Rebounding dominance: Levice won the battle on the glass, limiting Handlova to one-shot possessions while creating extra chances of their own.
• Turnover pressure: Aggressive on-ball defence disrupted Handlova's half-court sets and fuelled Levice's fast break.
• Bench contribution: The home rotation provided steady scoring, keeping the intensity high even with starters resting.
• Free-throw efficiency: Levice capitalised on their trips to the line, preventing Handlova from clawing back through foul trouble.

Standout Performances

Levice's backcourt set the tone on both ends, pushing the pace and finding open shooters in transition. Their interior players anchored the defensive effort, contesting shots at the rim and cleaning up the defensive boards. For Handlova, the bright spots came from their guards, who kept competing and generated several well-worked baskets in the fourth quarter even as the result slipped away. Their effort on the offensive glass was a positive takeaway despite the loss.

Standings and Season Impact

The result gives ONYX Levice an ideal start to their Slovenska Basketbalova Liga season, adding early momentum and a healthy points differential that could matter when the standings tighten later in the campaign. For Handlova, the defeat is a reminder of the gap between mid-table competitiveness and the league's upper tier, though the performance offered enough positives to suggest they will be a difficult opponent at home.

What's Next

Levice will look to build on this performance as they continue their domestic schedule, with their balanced scoring and defensive intensity providing a solid foundation. Handlova, meanwhile, will focus on reducing turnovers and improving their half-court execution ahead of their next fixture, where a return to home surroundings should offer a better chance to get points on the board.
