The Russia Women's Cup continued with a competitive cup tie on 28 September 2026, as Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women travelled to face Yunost B Women and came away with a 72-62 road victory. The ten-point margin flattered the visitors only slightly, because this was a game decided by a decisive second-quarter surge and a composed closing stretch, rather than a one-sided blowout.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women controlled the tempo for long stretches, building a working lead in the first half and then answering every Yunost B run after the interval. Yunost B Women stayed within touching distance for most of the night and briefly threatened to flip the momentum in the third quarter, but a late 8-2 run from Metallurg in the fourth sealed the result and confirmed their place in the next stage of the cup.

Match Overview

The final score read Yunost B Women 62 – 72 Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women, a result that reflected the visitors' superior shooting efficiency and their edge on the defensive glass. Metallurg led for the majority of the contest, while Yunost B's best passages came in transition, where their younger legs kept them in the hunt.

• Final score: Yunost B Women 62 – 72 Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women
• Competition: Russia Women's Cup
• Date: 28 September 2026
• Quarter-by-quarter: 18-22, 15-19, 16-14, 13-17
• Halftime: Yunost B 33 – 41 Metallurg

The opening quarter set the tone. Metallurg came out with a patient half-court offence, working the ball inside and then kicking out to shooters, and they closed the first ten minutes with a four-point cushion. Yunost B stayed aggressive on the break but conceded several second-chance points, a pattern that would prove costly.

Key Moments

The second quarter was where the game tilted. Metallurg opened the period with a 9-2 burst, pushing their lead into double figures for the first time. Yunost B responded through a pair of quick steals that turned into easy lay-ups, but every time they trimmed the deficit, the visitors had an answer — usually a mid-range jumper or an offensive rebound that extended the possession.

Trailing 33-41 at the break, Yunost B produced their best stretch of the game early in the third. A 10-3 run, built on pressure defence and two three-pointers from the wing, cut the margin to a single possession and forced Metallurg into a timeout. The timeout worked: Metallurg slowed the pace, drew fouls, and finished the quarter with a 5-0 mini-run to restore a six-point edge heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter was a grind. Yunost B had chances to make it a one-possession game with under five minutes to play, but missed free throws and a pair of rushed attempts in the lane let Metallurg off the hook. The decisive blow came with roughly three minutes remaining, when Metallurg strung together eight straight points — a corner three, a fast-break lay-up and three free throws — to push the lead to 13 and effectively end the contest.

Tactical Story

Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women won this game with defence and rebounding. They switched between man-to-man and a compact zone, daring Yunost B to shoot from the perimeter, and they controlled the defensive boards well enough to limit second-chance opportunities in the second half.

Yunost B Women, by contrast, played with pace and pressure. Their full-court press generated turnovers and kept them within range, but the trade-off was foul trouble and a stretched rotation. When the game slowed in the fourth quarter and became a half-court battle, Metallurg's experience and shot selection told.

Standout Players

For Metallurg Magnitogorsk Women, the backcourt set the tone. Anastasia Komarova dictated the tempo and knocked down crucial shots whenever Yunost B threatened, while Daria Yezhova did the heavy lifting inside, scoring in the paint and drawing fouls. Ekaterina Golovko chipped in with timely perimeter shooting and a handful of deflections that turned into points at the other end.

Yunost B Women were led by Polina Sokolova, whose energy on both ends sparked the third-quarter comeback, and by Vera Zhukova, who attacked the rim relentlessly and finished with a team-high scoring night. Alina Kovaleva also impressed with her work on the offensive glass, giving her side extra possessions during their best stretches.
