Elba Timisoara knocked Petrolul Ploiesti out of the Romania Basketball Cup with a convincing 88-74 road win, a result built on sharp perimeter shooting and a dominant second-half stretch. The visitors trailed early but took control before halftime and never surrendered the advantage.

Match Overview

Cup basketball rewards teams that handle pressure, and Elba Timisoara did exactly that in a hostile environment. Petrolul Ploiesti started brightly in front of their home crowd, using energy and second-chance points to build a modest lead. But Elba's response was measured and clinical: they tightened their defense, found open shooters in transition, and flipped the game by the middle of the second quarter.

The second half was largely one-way traffic. Elba extended their lead to as many as 20 points before Petrolul trimmed the margin late. The 14-point final scoreline was a fair reflection of a game in which the better-balanced team advanced.

Key Moments

• First-quarter response: After falling behind early, Elba closed the opening period with a run to level the score.
• Second-quarter swing: A string of three-pointers gave the visitors their first double-digit lead before halftime.
• Third-quarter knockout: Elba opened the second half with a 10-0 burst, effectively ending Petrolul's resistance.
• Garbage-time resistance: Petrolul's bench cut into the deficit in the final minutes, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Tactical Story

Elba's offense was predicated on ball movement and spacing. They pushed the ball in transition after Petrolul's misses, attacked closeouts, and generated high-quality catch-and-shoot opportunities from the wings. When Petrolul tried to switch screens, Elba punished the mismatches inside; when they stayed home, the visitors found open shooters.

Defensively, Elba sagged off Petrolul's least threatening shooters and challenged everything at the rim. The hosts were forced into difficult, contested shots and struggled to generate clean looks in the half court. Petrolul's rebounding kept them within striking distance early, but once Elba controlled the defensive glass, the game broke open.

Standout Players

Elba's guards set the tone, combining efficient perimeter scoring with steady playmaking that kept the offense balanced. Their interior players did the dirty work — screening, rolling, and battling on the boards — and the bench provided meaningful minutes without a drop in intensity.

Petrolul Ploiesti had individual performances worth noting, particularly from their leading scorers who kept fighting into the fourth quarter. But the supporting cast struggled against Elba's physicality, and the hosts' half-court offense never found the fluidity it needed to mount a genuine comeback.

Season Impact

The win sends Elba Timisoara through in the Romania Basketball Cup and hands them a confidence-building road victory against domestic opposition. Cup runs can reshape a season, and Elba's balance on both ends suggests they can be a dangerous draw in the next round.

For Petrolul Ploiesti, the exit is a frustrating one. There were encouraging signs in the opening minutes, but the defensive breakdowns and cold shooting stretch that followed are the areas the coaching staff will target as league play continues.
