Olivais Futebol Clube delivered a statement road performance in Portugal Nacional 1A, defeating Fides Gondobasket 96-80 behind a high-powered offensive display and a dominant second half. The visitors controlled the game after halftime, turning a tight contest into a comfortable win and handing Fides a difficult home defeat.

Match overview

Fides Gondobasket started well in front of their home supporters, using energy and aggressive drives to build an early advantage. Olivais took time to settle, but once their perimeter shots began to fall, the game shifted. The first quarter ended with Olivais ahead by a narrow margin, and the second quarter developed into a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading runs.

The decisive change came after halftime. Olivais increased their defensive intensity, contested every catch, and forced Fides into rushed possessions. Offensively, the visitors moved the ball beautifully, finding open shooters and attacking closeouts. By the end of the third quarter, Olivais had built a double-digit lead, and they maintained control through the final period to secure a 16-point victory.

Key moments

The game’s turning point arrived early in the third quarter. With the score tight, Olivais opened the half with a 12-2 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers. The burst forced Fides to call timeout, but the momentum had already swung. Olivais’ defense continued to suffocate Fides’ half-court attack, and the lead continued to grow.

Fides made one final push midway through the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to nine, but Olivais responded with a composed sequence: a drive-and-kick three, a defensive stop, and a fast-break finish. That flurry ended any realistic hope of a comeback and allowed Olivais to close out the game with confidence.

Tactical story

Olivais’ offense was fluid and unselfish. The team generated high-quality looks through ball movement, spacing, and timely cuts. Their guards did an excellent job of breaking down Fides’ defense, either finishing at the rim or finding open teammates on the perimeter. When Fides collapsed into the paint, Olivais made them pay from beyond the arc.

Defensively, Olivais’ ability to switch and contest without fouling was crucial. Fides’ guards found little room to operate, and the home side’s big men were forced into tough post catches. Fides had success on the offensive glass in the first half, but Olivais limited second chances after halftime and controlled the defensive rebound battle.

Standout performers

Olivais’ backcourt was outstanding, combining scoring and playmaking while setting a high tempo. The wings knocked down important shots and defended multiple positions. Inside, Olivais’ big men provided rebounding, rim protection, and efficient finishing around the basket.

Fides Gondobasket had strong individual moments, particularly from their guards, who attacked the rim and drew fouls. However, the team’s offense became stagnant in the third quarter, and defensive breakdowns allowed Olivais to build an insurmountable lead.

What it means

The road win is a significant result for Olivais Futebol Clube in the Portugal Nacional 1A standings, showcasing their scoring depth and ability to perform away from home. For Fides Gondobasket, the loss is a reminder that consistency on the defensive end is essential against the league’s stronger offensive teams. Fides will need to regroup quickly, while Olivais can take confidence from a complete team performance.
