Vasco da Gama U23 edged CB Viana/Nortaluga 81-77 in a tightly contested Portugal Nacional 1A basketball match, using a late fourth-quarter surge to secure an important road victory. The game was close for long stretches, with neither side able to build a comfortable lead until the final minutes, when Vasco’s composure at both ends made the difference.

Match overview

CB Viana/Nortaluga opened with energy in front of their home support and attacked the paint early, while Vasco da Gama U23 answered with quick ball movement and perimeter shooting. The lead changed hands repeatedly through the first half, and the score remained tight heading into the closing period. Vasco’s ability to force turnovers and convert them into transition points proved decisive in the final stretch.

By quarters, the contest followed a 19-18, 20-22, 17-19, 21-22 pattern, reflecting just how little separated the teams. Viana stayed within reach thanks to their interior scoring and second-chance opportunities, but Vasco’s backcourt control and late free-throw shooting sealed the result.

Key moments

The decisive sequence came in the last three minutes, when Vasco da Gama U23 turned a one-possession game into a two-score cushion. A defensive rebound led to a fast-break basket, and back-to-back stops forced Viana into hurried outside shots. Vasco then knocked down key free throws to protect the lead, while Viana’s final attempts from beyond the arc rimmed out.

• Vasco closed the game on a 9-2 run.
• Viana was held without a field goal for nearly three minutes late in the fourth.
• Vasco’s bench provided valuable minutes and scoring support.

Tactical story

CB Viana/Nortaluga’s game plan revolved around getting the ball inside and exploiting mismatches near the basket. That approach worked for long stretches, but Vasco adjusted by collapsing the defense and forcing contested shots. Offensively, Vasco da Gama U23 played with pace, pushing the ball after misses and using ball screens to create open looks from the perimeter.

The game ultimately came down to execution. Viana won the rebounding battle in patches, but Vasco’s lower turnover count and better late-game decision-making tilted the contest. Viana’s half-court offense became more predictable in the fourth quarter, while Vasco kept moving the ball and found open cutters.

Standout performers

Vasco da Gama U23’s backcourt controlled the tempo and delivered in crunch time, combining timely shot-making with steady free-throw shooting. Their defensive pressure also disrupted Viana’s rhythm. For CB Viana/Nortaluga, the frontcourt was the team’s most reliable source of offense, scoring through contact and keeping the hosts in the game until the final minute.

Season impact

The 81-77 win gives Vasco da Gama U23 a valuable road result in Portugal Nacional 1A and adds momentum to their campaign. For CB Viana/Nortaluga, the loss is a narrow one, but it highlights the importance of late-game execution and defensive rebounding in a competitive league. Both teams will look to build on the lessons from a match that was decided by small margins.
