Sanjoanense earned a hard-fought 86-78 road victory over Academico FC in Portugal Nacional 1A basketball action, using a composed fourth-quarter performance to separate in a game that stayed competitive deep into the second half.

The win gives Sanjoanense an important result away from home and strengthens their position in the league standings. Academico FC, meanwhile, will be frustrated to let a close contest slip away on their own floor after matching the visitors for long stretches.

Match overview

Both teams traded baskets early, with Academico FC using its interior presence to score around the rim and Sanjoanense answering with perimeter shooting and quick ball movement. Neither side managed to build a significant lead in the first half, and the game entered the break with the outcome very much in the balance.

The third quarter followed a similar pattern, but Sanjoanense began to gain control at the defensive end. By forcing Academico into contested shots and limiting second-chance points, the visitors slowly tilted the game in their favor before finishing strong in the final period.

Key moments

• Early exchanges: Academico FC started aggressively inside, while Sanjoanense kept pace with timely three-point shooting.
• Third-quarter pressure: Sanjoanense tightened its defense and forced several key turnovers, creating easier scoring opportunities in transition.
• Fourth-quarter run: A decisive scoring stretch midway through the final period gave the visitors enough separation to control the closing minutes.
• Free-throw execution: Sanjoanense converted key free throws down the stretch to keep Academico from mounting a late comeback.

Tactical story

Sanjoanense’s victory was built on defensive discipline and timely shot-making. The visitors contested Academico’s interior looks, rotated well on the perimeter, and made the home side work for every possession. Offensively, Sanjoanense moved the ball efficiently and found open shooters when Academico collapsed into the paint.

Academico FC had success when it played through the post and attacked the offensive glass, but the team’s scoring stalled in crucial moments. Missed free throws and a handful of untimely turnovers proved costly, allowing Sanjoanense to seize control late.

Standout performers

Sanjoanense received balanced production from its backcourt and wings, with multiple players contributing in double figures. The team’s guards handled pressure well and made smart decisions in the closing minutes, while the frontcourt battled on the boards to limit Academico’s second-chance opportunities.

Academico FC’s leading scorers kept the home side competitive for much of the night, particularly with aggressive drives and mid-range shooting. However, the team lacked the final offensive spark needed to answer Sanjoanense’s fourth-quarter surge.

Season impact and standings

The 86-78 win is a valuable boost for Sanjoanense in the Portugal Nacional 1A standings, especially because it came on the road against a direct competitor. The result also adds momentum to their head-to-head record and reinforces their ability to close out tight games.

For Academico FC, the defeat is a missed opportunity to protect home court. The team will need to improve its late-game execution and defensive rebounding as the season progresses, with plenty of league fixtures still to come.

What’s next

Sanjoanense will look to build on the road win when they return to action, while Academico FC will focus on correcting the details that cost them down the stretch. Both clubs remain in the competitive mix of Portugal Nacional 1A, where road results and head-to-head advantages often shape the playoff picture.
