Quarteira Tubaroes edged SC Farense 72-67 in a hard-fought Portugal Nacional 2A matchup, relying on late composure and a decisive defensive stretch to secure the win at home. The game was close throughout, but Quarteira made the bigger plays in the final minutes to deny Farense a road result.

Match overview

The opening quarter was a cagey affair, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish a significant lead. Quarteira looked to attack inside early, while SC Farense countered with patient ball movement and outside shooting. The lead changed hands several times, and the first half ended with the momentum still very much up for grabs.

The third quarter brought more intensity. Quarteira began to force turnovers with aggressive help defense, and Farense’s offense became more reliant on contested jump shots. Still, the visitors stayed within reach thanks to timely offensive rebounds and free throws. The final quarter turned into a possession-by-possession battle, with Quarteira finally creating separation in the last three minutes.

Key moments

The defining stretch came with just over four minutes remaining. Trailing by one, Quarteira produced a 9-2 run sparked by a steal and fast-break layup. A corner three followed, and then a crucial offensive rebound led to two free throws that pushed the lead to six. Farense had chances to respond but missed several open looks and turned the ball over on a critical possession.

In the final minute, Quarteira’s defense held firm. A contested mid-range attempt from Farense rimmed out, and Quarteira sealed the game at the free-throw line. The home crowd’s energy played a role in the closing moments, as the visitors rushed shots in an attempt to extend the game.

Tactical story

Quarteira’s success came from its defensive activity. The hosts rotated well, closed out on shooters, and forced Farense into difficult decisions. On offense, Quarteira was at its best when the ball touched the paint. Drives and post entries created open corner threes and second-chance opportunities. The team’s rebounding effort, particularly on the offensive end, was a major factor in the win.

SC Farense executed well for long stretches, using screens and off-ball movement to generate looks. However, the visitors struggled to score when Quarteira raised its defensive pressure in the fourth quarter. Farense’s half-court offense became too perimeter-oriented, and the lack of inside touches made it easier for Quarteira to defend the arc.

Standout performers

Quarteira’s guards set the tone with energetic defense and timely shot-making. The frontcourt battled on the boards and provided important interior scoring. It was a collective effort, with contributions coming from the bench as well, particularly on the defensive end during the decisive run.

For SC Farense, the perimeter players kept the team in the game with difficult shot-making, and the big men worked hard on the glass. But the visitors will rue missed free throws and a handful of costly turnovers in the final five minutes.

What it means

The win is a valuable one for Quarteira Tubaroes in the Portugal Nacional 2A table, giving them a hard-earned home victory against a competitive Farense side. It also demonstrates their ability to execute under pressure, an important quality as the season progresses. SC Farense leave with a narrow defeat but can take encouragement from their competitiveness on the road, though they will need to sharpen their late-game execution.
