Victoria Górnik Wałbrzych hold off Dziki Warszawa in 74-71 thriller

Victoria Górnik Wałbrzych picked up a hard-earned 74-71 home victory over Dziki Warszawa in Polska Liga Koszykowki action on October 18, 2026, surviving a tense final quarter at 18:30 to close out a game that was decided in the last minute. The win gives Wałbrzych an important early-season result and adds another closely fought chapter to the Polish basketball season.

The contest was never comfortable for either side. Wałbrzych led by two after the opening quarter, trailed by two at halftime, and then used a strong third period to regain control. Dziki refused to fade away, trimming the deficit repeatedly in the fourth, but the hosts made the bigger plays down the stretch and protected their home floor.

Wabrzych’s third-quarter surge proved decisive. After a balanced first half in which both teams traded runs, the hosts found better rhythm in the paint and forced Dziki into several contested late-clock attempts. That 21-15 advantage in the third gave Wałbrzych just enough cushion to withstand a scrappy finish.

Key moments

Dziki Warszawa stayed within striking distance throughout the fourth quarter and cut the game to a one-possession contest in the final two minutes. Wałbrzych answered with a composed drive to the rim, then added crucial free throws to keep the visitors at arm’s length. Dziki had one last look from beyond the arc, but the attempt rimmed out, allowing the home side to run out the clock.

The game’s defining stretch came midway through the third quarter, when Wałbrzych strung together defensive stops and converted second-chance opportunities. Those extra possessions mattered in a game where neither team shot the ball with real comfort from the perimeter. Dziki’s half-court execution was solid for long stretches, but the visitors were left chasing the game after their third-quarter dry spell.

Tactical story

Wałbrzych’s rebounding and interior presence gave it a slight but meaningful edge. The hosts generated more second-chance points and were able to score through contact when the pace slowed. Dziki, meanwhile, relied on ball movement and perimeter probing, but the shots that fell earlier in the first half became harder to find after halftime.

Turnovers also shaped the contest. Dziki forced several live-ball turnovers that led to transition chances, but Wałbrzych’s half-court defense tightened in the closing stages. The home team’s ability to defend without fouling in the final minute proved just as important as its late shot-making.

Standout performers

Wałbrzych’s backcourt controlled the tempo when it mattered most, mixing timely drives with steady free-throw shooting. The frontcourt also delivered a physical performance on the glass, helping the hosts win the battle of extra possessions. For Dziki, the interior anchor and primary ball-handler kept the visitors in the game, but their efforts were not quite enough to complete the comeback.

This result will be remembered as a gritty home win rather than a shooting showcase. For Wałbrzych, it is the kind of victory that can build confidence early in the Polska Liga Koszykowki campaign, while Dziki Warszawa will take encouragement from a road performance that remained competitive until the final possession.
