Mapua Cardinals U19 edged San Sebastian Golden Stags (Youth) 72-69 in UAAP U19 basketball on October 19, 2026, surviving a tight finish to claim a three-point road victory.

Mapua hold on in a tight finish

The Cardinals built their win on composure in the closing minutes. San Sebastian kept the game within a single possession for much of the fourth quarter, but Mapua made the smarter plays when it mattered most, protecting the ball and converting enough free throws to keep the Golden Stags at arm’s length.

San Sebastian’s youth side showed plenty of fight. The home team responded to Mapua’s runs with energy and kept the contest balanced, but the final possessions slipped away. In a game separated by just three points, small details made the difference: a defensive rebound here, a turnover there, and the ability to execute under pressure.

How Mapua secured the win

Mapua’s offense was not built on a single explosive quarter. Instead, the Cardinals stayed steady, moved the ball well, and found answers when San Sebastian threatened to take control. Their defense also held firm in the final minute, forcing the Golden Stags into difficult looks.

• Late-game execution: Mapua made the key plays in the final two minutes.
• Free-throw composure: The Cardinals converted crucial opportunities from the line.
• Defensive rebounding: Mapua limited second-chance points when the game was on the line.

San Sebastian’s strong effort

The Golden Stags (Youth) will be disappointed with the result but encouraged by the competitiveness of their performance. They matched Mapua for long stretches and had chances to flip the game. The 69-point total was enough to stay in contention, but San Sebastian could not find the final basket needed to complete the comeback.

UAAP U19 standings and season impact

The 72-69 win gives Mapua Cardinals U19 an important result in the UAAP U19 campaign, strengthening their confidence in close games. For San Sebastian Golden Stags (Youth), the narrow defeat is a reminder of how fine the margins can be in youth basketball.

Both teams will take lessons from the matchup. Mapua will value the poise shown in the final quarter, while San Sebastian will focus on late-game decision-making and execution. With only three points separating the sides, this was a contest that could have gone either way — and Mapua did just enough to make sure it went theirs.

Key takeaway

In a game defined by tension and small margins, Mapua’s ability to stay calm in the closing moments proved decisive. San Sebastian pushed them all the way, but the Cardinals left with the win and the momentum.
