Ateneo de Manila University claimed a gritty 69-65 road win over the NU Bulldogs in Philippines University Athletic Association action on October 28, 2026. The game came down to the final two minutes, when Ateneo’s composure and defensive discipline proved just enough to hold off a determined NU comeback.

Game Overview

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with NU Bulldogs using their size inside to build a narrow lead while Ateneo relied on perimeter shooting and quick ball movement. Neither side led by more than six points before halftime. The pace slowed in the third quarter, turning the contest into a half-court grind, and the final period became a possession-by-possession battle. Ateneo made the bigger plays late, converting key free throws and forcing two crucial turnovers in the closing minutes.

Key Moments

• Ateneo closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a four-point lead into the final period.
• NU Bulldogs tied the game at 63-63 with just over two minutes remaining.
• Ateneo responded with a baseline jumper and a steal that led to free throws.
• NU’s final possession ended with a contested three-pointer that rimmed out.

Standout Performers

Rafael Santos added 15 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute, while center Gabriel Lim provided crucial rim protection with four blocks. For NU, Jolo Bautista posted a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, but Ateneo’s defense forced him into difficult shots down the stretch.

Tactical Story

Ateneo’s defensive adjustments in the second half changed the game. The Blue Eagles began doubling NU’s post entries and rotating faster on the weak side, forcing the Bulldogs into perimeter shots. Offensively, Ateneo used high ball screens to create driving lanes and attacked the offensive glass with guards. NU remained competitive by dominating the paint in the first half, but their inability to convert late free throws and protect the ball proved costly.

Standings Impact

The win boosts Ateneo’s positioning in the UAAP standings and adds a valuable result in a crowded Final Four race. For the NU Bulldogs, the loss is a missed opportunity at home, though their performance against a strong Ateneo side shows they remain dangerous. Both teams will need to manage fatigue and execution as the university season enters its decisive stretch.
