UPHSD Altas 70-72 JRU Heavy Bombers: Late Defensive Stand Seals Road Win

The JRU Heavy Bombers edged the UPHSD Altas 72-70 in Philippines National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball on 20 October 2026, holding off a late surge to secure a two-point road victory. The game was tight throughout, with neither team able to build a double-digit lead.

UPHSD's home crowd pushed the Altas in the fourth quarter, but JRU's composure at the free-throw line and a final defensive stop proved decisive. The win gives the Heavy Bombers a valuable result in a crowded NCAA race.

Match overview

The first half was a back-and-forth battle. UPHSD attacked the basket early, using quick guards to break down the defense and create open looks. JRU responded with balanced scoring and strong work on the offensive glass. The lead changed hands several times, and neither team entered halftime with meaningful separation.

The second half followed a similar pattern, but JRU began to control the tempo. The Heavy Bombers slowed the game down, executed in the half court, and forced UPHSD into contested shots. The Altas stayed close with timely three-pointers and second-chance points, setting up a tense finish.

Key moments

• JRU built a narrow lead in the third quarter behind a run of defensive stops.
• UPHSD answered with back-to-back baskets to tie the game in the fourth.
• JRU converted key free throws in the final minute to move ahead by two.
• A final defensive possession denied UPHSD a clean look at the buzzer.

Tactical story

JRU's half-court defense was the difference. The Heavy Bombers limited UPHSD's transition opportunities and forced the Altas to work deep into the shot clock. On offense, JRU attacked the paint and drew fouls, reaching the bonus early in the fourth quarter. Those free throws became crucial in a game decided by two points.

UPHSD's guards kept the Altas in it with penetration and kick-out passes, but the team struggled to convert around the rim against JRU's size. The Altas also missed a few crucial free throws down the stretch, which proved costly in such a close contest. JRU's rebounding and poise under pressure stood out.

Standout performers

JRU's backcourt handled the ball well and made timely decisions in the final minutes. The frontcourt controlled the glass and protected the rim. For UPHSD, the guards were the engine, creating scoring chances off the dribble, but the Altas needed more production from the interior to close the game.

What it means

The 72-70 win is a confidence boost for JRU Heavy Bombers and could be important in the NCAA standings. For UPHSD Altas, the loss is a tough one to absorb, especially after fighting back in the fourth quarter. The Altas will need to improve their late-game execution and free-throw shooting as the season progresses.
