JRU Heavy Bombers edged LPU Pirates 81-78 in a thrilling NCAA Philippines matchup, surviving a late surge and making the decisive plays on both ends in the final minute.

Match overview

The game lived up to the intensity expected from a college basketball rivalry, with both teams trading runs and refusing to give ground. JRU’s offense found enough rhythm in the second half to build a narrow lead, but LPU kept answering with timely baskets and aggressive drives. The final possessions came down to execution, composure and defensive discipline.

First-half flow

The opening half was a back-and-forth affair. LPU attacked the basket with purpose and tried to force JRU into early foul trouble, while the Heavy Bombers relied on ball movement and perimeter shooting to stay close. Neither team managed to break away, and the scoreboard reflected how evenly matched the sides looked for much of the contest.

Second-half turning point

JRU created a small but important cushion after halftime by tightening their defense and limiting LPU’s clean looks from beyond the arc. The Heavy Bombers also improved their rebounding position, which allowed them to control the tempo and avoid giving the Pirates extra possessions. LPU remained dangerous, but JRU’s ability to answer each run kept the momentum from shifting completely.

Final-minute drama

With the game hanging in the balance, JRU executed better in the closing seconds. They protected the ball, made timely free throws and forced LPU into a difficult final shot. The Pirates had chances to tie or take the lead, but JRU’s defensive rotations and poise under pressure proved decisive. The three-point margin was a fair reflection of how little separated the teams.

Standout factors

JRU’s backcourt play was central to the win, particularly in managing the pace and creating scoring opportunities late. Their interior players also contributed crucial rebounds and defensive stops. LPU showed resilience and offensive firepower, but costly turnovers and missed opportunities in the final minutes ultimately made the difference.

NCAA Philippines impact

The victory gives JRU an important confidence boost and valuable momentum in the NCAA Philippines standings. For LPU, the narrow defeat will sting, but the performance showed they can compete in high-pressure games. In a league where every possession matters, JRU’s ability to close out an 81-78 contest could prove significant as the season progresses.
