The San Juan Knights defeated the Bataan Risers 94-84 in a hard-fought Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) matchup on October 5, 2026. Playing on their home floor, the Knights used a balanced offensive attack, timely three-point shooting, and a series of crucial fourth-quarter stops to secure the double-digit win. The final scoreline suggests a comfortable margin, but the Risers remained within striking distance for much of the second half before San Juan pulled away late.

With the victory, San Juan strengthens its position in the MPBL standings and adds an important head-to-head result to its season resume. Bataan, meanwhile, leaves with a tough road loss but showed enough fight to suggest it will remain a factor in the playoff race.

How San Juan Won

San Juan shot 44% from the field, 35% from beyond the arc, and 74% from the free-throw line. Bataan finished at 41% overall, 32% from three-point range, and 70% from the charity stripe. The Knights also received a significant boost from their bench, outscoring the Bataan reserves 28-17.

Standout Players

San Juan’s Rafael “Paeng” Mercado led all scorers with 22 points, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. He was particularly effective in the pick-and-roll, repeatedly finding seams in the Bataan defense. Kevin Espinosa added 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Dennis Villamor provided 14 points off the bench, including two clutch fourth-quarter baskets.

For Bataan, Jayson Alvarado paced the attack with 20 points, while Rico Salazar chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. Nico Panganiban added 13 points, but the Risers struggled to generate consistent offense in the final five minutes, settling for contested jumpers as San Juan’s defense tightened.

Tactical Story

San Juan’s coaching staff emphasized half-court discipline and active hands on defense. The Knights switched aggressively on screens, walled off the paint, and forced Bataan into low-percentage attempts. Offensively, San Juan attacked the middle of Bataan’s zone in the second half, using high-post entries and baseline cuts to create open looks.

Bataan’s zone defense briefly disrupted San Juan’s rhythm in the third quarter, but the Knights adjusted by pushing the pace and attacking before the zone could set. That tactical flexibility proved to be the difference in the final period.

MPBL Standings and Season Impact

The win gives San Juan valuable momentum as the MPBL regular season progresses. In a competitive league where playoff seeding is determined by the standings, every head-to-head result matters. San Juan’s victory over Bataan could become an important tiebreaker if the two teams finish with similar records.

Bataan remains in the playoff conversation despite the loss. The Risers have shown the ability to compete with upper-tier teams, but they will need to improve the
