Rizal Xentro Mall Golden Coolers held off a determined GenSan Warriors side to claim a 78-73 victory in a Philippines MPBL game on Friday, October 2, 2026. In a contest defined by defensive pressure, timely shot-making, and a tense fourth quarter, the Golden Coolers protected their home court and added a valuable result to their Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League campaign.

The final margin was only five points, but the Golden Coolers controlled just enough of the key moments to keep the Warriors at arm’s length. GenSan stayed within striking distance for most of the second half, yet Rizal Xentro Mall consistently found an answer when the game threatened to slip away.

Match Overview

Rizal Xentro Mall set the tone early with active hands on defense and a willingness to attack the paint. The Warriors responded with a more deliberate half-court attack, using ball screens to create mid-range looks and occasional open threes. Neither team managed to build a double-digit lead until the second half, when the Golden Coolers made their decisive push.

Rizal Xentro Mall took a 38-35 lead into halftime, then used a strong third-quarter stretch to push the advantage to 59-52 entering the final period. GenSan won the fourth quarter by two points, but the Warriors could not fully erase the deficit.

Key Moments

The turning point came midway through the third quarter. With the score still tight, the Golden Coolers strung together a 9-2 run built on defensive stops, second-chance points, and a pair of fast-break finishes. That burst gave Rizal Xentro Mall the breathing room it needed and forced GenSan to play from behind.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors made one last surge. A quick 6-0 run cut the lead to just two possessions and silenced the home crowd for a moment. But the Golden Coolers responded with composed possessions, drawing fouls and converting key free throws down the stretch. A late defensive rebound and a tough contested basket in the final minute sealed the 78-73 result.

Tactical Story

Rizal Xentro Mall’s defensive approach was the foundation of the win. The Golden Coolers mixed man-to-man pressure with a compact zone look, daring GenSan to settle for outside shots. When the Warriors tried to feed the post, Rizal Xentro Mall sent quick double-teams and forced difficult kick-out passes. The strategy worked especially well in the third quarter, when GenSan’s offense stalled for long stretches.

On offense, the Golden Coolers balanced inside scoring with guard penetration. Their ball movement created open corner threes and offensive rebounds, while their transition game punished GenSan after missed shots. The Warriors, meanwhile, relied heavily on isolation plays and mid-range jumpers. That approach kept them close, but it also limited their ability to generate easy baskets during the decisive run.

Standout Players

• Migo Andrada (Rizal Xentro Mall): 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. Andrada controlled the pace and hit several important shots in the second half.
• Paolo Villanueva (Rizal Xentro Mall): 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks. His interior presence gave the Golden Coolers a reliable anchor on both ends.
• Jayson Mariano (Rizal Xentro Mall): 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals. Mariano’s energy in transition sparked the third-quarter run.
• Christian Palma (GenSan Warriors): 20 points, 5 rebounds. Palma kept the Warriors within reach with timely shot-making.
• Rico Dizon (GenSan Warriors): 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists. Dizon was effective in the pick-and-roll but ran into foul trouble late.
• Mark Lumibao (GenSan Warriors): 12 points, 4 assists. Lumibao provided secondary scoring and helped break pressure in the backcourt.
