Pasay Voyagers grinded out a 66-64 victory over Meycauayan in a defensive-minded MPBL clash on October 9, 2026, at the Cuneta Astrodome. In a game where every possession felt like a playoff battle, Pasay’s late-game poise and a clutch defensive stop in the final seconds sealed a crucial home win.

Match Overview

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is known for its physical, regional style, and this matchup fit that description perfectly. Both teams entered the game fighting for positioning in the standings, with Pasay looking to protect home court and Meycauayan seeking a valuable road upset. The 5:00 PM tip-off drew a lively crowd that was treated to a tense, low-scoring affair that went down to the wire.

With the win, Pasay improves its record and keeps pace in the playoff race, while Meycauayan falls just short in a game it led at halftime. The two-point margin underscores how thin the line is between victory and defeat in the MPBL.

First Half: Meycauayan Takes a Slim Lead

Pasay started strong, using an aggressive full-court press to force early turnovers. The Voyagers jumped out to an 18-14 lead after the first quarter, with guard John Rey Villanueva scoring eight points on an array of floaters and pull-up jumpers. Meycauayan struggled to find rhythm against Pasay’s zone defense, settling for contested threes.

But Meycauayan adjusted in the second quarter. They slowed the pace, attacked the offensive glass, and began feeding the ball inside to their big men. A 10-0 run midway through the period gave Meycauayan a 31-30 halftime lead. Pasay’s offense went cold, shooting just 5-of-18 in the second quarter, and the Voyagers went into the locker room searching for answers.

Third Quarter: Pasay Reclaims Control

The Voyagers came out of halftime with renewed energy. Coach’s adjustment to a smaller, quicker lineup paid dividends, as Pasay switched everything on defense and forced Meycauayan into five turnovers in the first six minutes of the third. Offensively, Villanueva continued to attack, while forward Mark Montuano knocked down two corner threes to spark a 20-15 quarter.

By the end of the third, Pasay had reclaimed a 50-46 lead. The Voyagers’ ball movement improved dramatically, and they held Meycauayan to just 15 points in the period—their lowest quarter output of the game.

Fourth Quarter: A Finish for the Ages

The final quarter was a back-and-forth slugfest. Meycauayan refused to go away, tying the game at 58-58 on a putback by Jopet Soriano with 4:30 remaining. Pasay answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a tough baseline jumper from Villanueva, to take a 64-58 lead with 2:10 left.

Meycauayan responded with a 6-0 run of their own, knotting the score at 64-64 after a steal and layup with 38 seconds remaining. Pasay held for the final shot, and Villanueva drove hard to the basket, drawing a foul with 4.2 seconds left. He calmly sank both free throws to put Pasay up 66-64. Meycauayan’s final heave from half-court was off the mark, and the Voyagers escaped with the win.

Standout Players

• John Rey Villanueva (Pasay): 22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists. Villanueva was the game’s top scorer and hit the decisive free throws in the final seconds.
• Mark Montuano (Pasay): 14 points, 9 rebounds. Montuano’s third-quarter threes shifted the momentum and his interior defense was crucial down the stretch.
• Jopet Soriano (Meycauayan): 18 points, 12 rebounds. Soriano dominated the paint in the first half and kept Meycauayan alive with timely baskets.
• Renz Palma (Meycauayan): 13 points, 6 assists, 3 steals. Palma’s defensive pressure sparked Meycauayan’s fourth-quarter run.

Tactical Story

This was a game of adjustments. Pasay’s first-quarter press gave them an early edge, but Meycauayan’s second-quarter patience and inside scoring flipped the script. The Voyagers’ third-quarter switch to a smaller lineup was the turning point—it increased their defensive versatility and opened driving lanes for Villanueva.

Meycauayan won the rebounding battle 42-38 but committed 17 turnovers, which Pasay converted into 18 points. The Voyagers also shot 15-of-20 from the free-throw line (75%), while Meycauayan managed just 10-of-17 (58.8%). In a two-point game, those extra points at the stripe made all the difference.

Season Impact and What’s Next

For Pasay, this win is a confidence booster as they push for a higher seed in the MPBL playoffs. The Voyagers have now won two straight and are finding their identity on the defensive end. Meycauayan, meanwhile, remains in the hunt but will rue missed opportunities in a game they controlled for long stretches.

Pasay next travels to face a tough Northern Division rival, while Meyc
