The Basilan Viva Portmasters protected their home floor with an 81-76 victory over Meycauayan on 14 September 2026, grinding out a five-point win in Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) action. It was a game that never quite broke open — the two teams traded the lead through three quarters before Basilan finally put together the decisive run in the last six minutes to close it out.

The result keeps the Portmasters in the thick of the playoff conversation, while Meycauayan leave with a familiar frustration: a strong road performance undone by a cold shooting stretch at exactly the wrong moment.

Match Overview

• Final score: Basilan Viva Portmasters 81, Meycauayan 76
• Competition: MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League)
• Date: 14 September 2026
• Result: Basilan win by 5 points
• Half-time: Meycauayan 39, Basilan 38

The quarter-by-quarter scoring tells the story of a genuinely close contest:

• First quarter: Basilan 20, Meycauayan 17
• Second quarter: Meycauayan 22, Basilan 18
• Third quarter: Basilan 21, Meycauayan 19
• Fourth quarter: Basilan 22, Meycauayan 18

Meycauayan's best stretch came in the second period, when they pushed the tempo off defensive stops and briefly opened a lead that forced the Portmasters into a timeout. Basilan answered after the break with a more controlled half-court approach, and the fourth quarter swung their way on the boards and at the free-throw line.

How the Game Unfolded

Basilan started brightly in front of their home crowd, attacking the rim early and earning second-chance points through their frontcourt. Meycauayan responded the way good road teams do — by slowing things down on offense and forcing the Portmasters into contested mid-range jumpers.

The second quarter belonged to the visitors. Meycauayan strung together an 11-2 run that turned a three-point deficit into a six-point cushion, and they carried a one-point lead into the locker room at 39-38. It was the kind of half where neither team shot particularly well from the perimeter, but Meycauayan's activity on the offensive glass kept them in front.

The third quarter was a chess match. Basilan tightened their pick-and-roll coverage, forced a handful of late-shot-clock possessions, and reclaimed the lead late in the period. The score sat at 59-58 heading into the final ten minutes — a margin that promised a tense finish, and delivered one.

Key Moments in the Fourth Quarter

The game turned on a two-minute stretch midway through the fourth. Trailing 66-64, Basilan got a corner three from their wing shooter, then a transition dunk off a steal to flip the score. Meycauayan called timeout, but the momentum had already shifted.

From there, the Portmasters managed the game maturely: they drew fouls on drives, converted their free throws, and refused to give Meycauayan clean looks from beyond the arc. A late Meycauayan three cut the gap to four with under a minute to play, but Basilan iced the game at the stripe and ran out the clock on an 81-76 win.

Tactical Story

Two distinct styles clashed here. Meycauayan wanted a fast, transition-heavy game, using their guards to push the ball after makes and misses alike. That worked beautifully for a quarter and a half, but it also left them vulnerable when their legs tired late.

Basilan, by contrast, leaned on a bigger, more physical lineup. Their advantage on the boards — particularly on the offensive end — gave them extra possessions in the second half, and their willingness to attack the paint drew the fouls that ultimately decided the game. Meycauayan's half-court offense became stagnant down the stretch, settling for contested jumpers rather than working the ball inside.

Standout Performers

• Basilan Viva Portmasters: A balanced scoring attack, with their guards controlling tempo in the fourth quarter and their big men dominating the glass. The team's free-throw shooting in the closing minutes was the difference.
• Meycauayan: Impressive efficiency in the first half, with strong contributions from their perimeter shooters and a gritty defensive effort that kept the game within reach until the final possession.

What It Means

For Basilan, the win is another marker of a team that has learned how to win ugly games — the kind of result that matters enormously when playoff seeding is decided by a game or two. Defending home court against a competitive opponent is exactly what contending teams in the MPBL must do.

Meycauayan will take encouragement from the performance even in defeat.
