Paraguay Championship Women: The Premier Domestic League

The Paraguay Championship Women, known officially as the División de Honor Femenina de Fútbol or the Primera División Femenina, is the top-tier professional women's football league in Paraguay. Governed by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), it represents the highest level of domestic competition in the country and serves as the primary development ground for the Paraguayan women's national team, La Albirroja.

League Structure and Key Clubs

The championship typically follows an Apertura and Clausura system, common in South American football, with two separate tournament winners crowned each season. If a single club wins both tournaments, they are declared the annual champion. The league features the women's sections of Paraguay's most famous clubs, such as Club Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, and Libertad/Limpeño, whose rivalry extends passionately into the women's game, creating high-stakes, fiercely contested matches known as clásicos.

Pathway to Continental Football

Success in the Paraguay Championship Women grants qualification to the Copa Libertadores Femenina, South America's premier continental club competition. This provides Paraguayan clubs and players with the opportunity to test themselves against the best teams from Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina, raising the profile and standard of the domestic league. Performance in the Libertadores is a key measure of the league's growth and competitiveness on the continent.

Development of the Women's Game

The league has seen significant growth in professionalism, visibility, and investment in recent years, mirroring the global rise of women's football. It is the crucial pipeline for the national team, which has become increasingly competitive in CONMEBOL tournaments. The current champion is the team to beat, having demonstrated consistency and quality over the grueling domestic season. The continued evolution of the Paraguay Championship Women is essential for the future success of Paraguayan football on the international stage.
